I try to shoot specimens in black and white backgrounds, include ruler not always. I've got as well these in the white background with no ruler.

That looks ideal, the ruler doesn't impede anything, good quality, one con is that two sides of the moth are featured, Petr will notice that especially. :).
This species is illustrated with only these photos anywhere on the web, nothing to substitute with. I think such ruler as here makes photo more informative. Yet some authors might use wooden and plastic rulers, in an inaccurate manner or simply out of focus. Depends on situation, not in every shot. Photos as well happen to be quite poor which are blamed way more than a scarcely distinct ruler in ideal pic, that may be evenly bad or some art solution :)
