Taxonomy, synonyms and combinations

  • Papilio janus; Papilio saturatior; Chilasa clytia; Papilio similis; Papilio papone; Papilio casyapa; Papilio dissimilis. [PC81].

Imago Habitus and Differences from alike species

  • Wingspan 75-95 mm. F variable species, they generally occur in two main groups of form, brown and black forms with white markings.
    There are 7 variable forms including:
    - F. clytia (Linnaeus, 1758), the typical form, is brown with marginal and submarginal white markings,
    - F. onpape (Moore, 1879), occurring in the Penincula Thailand and Malaisia, subapical markings of f. clytia are enlarged into streaks.
    - F. janus (Fruhstofer, 1908), the white markings of f. clytia replaced by similar black markings.
    - F. papone (Westwood, 1872), the white markings of FW are more or less obsolete, the HW bears postdiscal pale internervular streaks of variable extent and both wings are dark brown with an indigo gross of variable intensity.
    - F. panope (Linnaeus, 1758), is similar to papone, but HW lacking postdiscal streaks.
    - F. dissimilis (Linnaeus, 1758), the pale streaks, though of variable width, are more or less unsullied, whereas those with sullied streaks is known as f. dissimillima.
    - F. dissimillima Evans, 1923 [144].
