Imago Habitus and Differences from alike species
- Верхняя сторона крыльев у самца темная, черно-бурая, у самки — светлее, кофейно-бурого цвета. Перевязь на передних крыльях у самца ржаво-красная, у самки — красновато-желтая. Передние крылья несут 2 глазка с белыми ядрами (вершина крыльев) и маленький глазок ближе к низу. На задних крыльях 3—4 глазчатых пятна с небольшими белыми ядрами. Для высокогорных лугов характерна форма f. altivaga Fruhst. с редуцированным красно-коричневым рисунком и меньшие, к тому же, по размеру. [85].

- Гусеница скрытна, живет внутри пучков травы, которой и питается. Обладает желтовато-серым туловищем с густыми, но тонкими и короткими щетинистыми волосками. На спине — темная линия, по каждую руку от нее — еще по одной светлой, под ними, в свою очередь, темно-бурая продольная полоска на каждом сегменте. Голова при всем при этом светлее, чем туловище. Питается ночью. [85].
