Need help identifying it!
My friends sent me a photo of this creature. The branch diameter is about 1 cm. Filmed in the Leningrad region. End of February.

A dead ladybug pupa in a larval exuvium, from the genus Chilocorus or Exochomus.

A dead ladybug pupa in a larval exuvium, from the genus Chilocorus or Exochomus.

And to me, similar ones were identified as larvae of the shield-bearer... wall.gif

Well, there are some similarities, of course:
Cassida - http://www.flickr.com/photos/eakringbirds/6107431870/
Chilocorus - http://www.pbase.com/image/115576446

Should these larvae be regarded as dead or alive?

Good afternoon,

Live, one has already pupated, and the second is just about to do it.

Can you tell me what it might be? There are no photos and the description is very uninformative. I saw them 3 times in my childhood, about 10 years ago, in Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, so there is no photo. A large insect with a body shape very similar to a wasp, matte black in color, I do not remember that there were stripes and other significant pigmentation. Large, about 40-45 mm (at least much larger than Vespa orientalis). Once I saw it on a tree crawling into a nest, the second time-when it was eating grapes.
You can't say for sure, it's understandable, but is it possible to determine which gender? Very similar to the carpenter bee, a photo of which was given on the forum, but according to the recollections of that insect, the body was narrower.

I didn't find the definition of Dermaptera, so I decided to ask here.
Forficula auricularia our usual is well known to me, but today I came across this rather large individual: M. O. G. Zheleznodorozhny, crawled over the sidewalk.
Female Forficula auricularia or someone else confused.gif

It may be F. auricularia or F. tomis (Kolenati, 1846). Females differ poorly, and you can try to distinguish them by the structure of the antennae:
for tomis: "the 4th segment is 2 times longer than its width, 1/3 shorter than the 3rd; the 5th segment is almost 1.5 times longer than the 4th and slightly longer than the 3rd" (Bey-Bienko, 1936: 137);
for auricularia: "the 4th segment is much shorter than the 3rd and slightly longer than its width, usually almost spherical, the 5th segment is slightly shorter than the 3rd, two or less times longer than its width, almost cylindrical; subsequent segments, starting from the 6th, thicker and much longer than the 3rd or 5th segments. " (Bey-Bienko, 1936: 152).

http://molbiol.ru/forums/index.php?showtopic=133597: by definition of beetles, there is a separate topic.
Think: Morimus verecundus (Faldermann, 1836)

Megarhyssa superba

Now in the oak forests fly riders who have females with a long ovipositor:
Ephialtes manifestator. They sit on long-fallen (sawn) and standing shrunken logs, very shy as well as related large riders, so if something happens, you need to inspect the logs from a distance.

Dolichomitus imperator starts flying in June. I wish you all good luck smile.gif

exactly Hydrachna cruenta
" Hydrachna with a long proboscis; the larvae are parasitic on water scorpions (Nepa), swimmers (Dytiscus), water lovers (Hydrophilus), etc.; for example, H. cruenta, red in color, is found everywhere in stagnant waters."
And I just watch the swimmers there, so they brought the tick.
