Good afternoon.

Tell me, please, what kind of insect I observed today on May 28 on the shore of the Sea of Azov (Zaporozhye region).

The size of our insect is about 4 cm in length, previously we have not seen such or did not pay attention.

Thank you.

Megascolia maculata

I've seen a case like this twice in my 29 years.
A village in the forest, a wooden house, a yard (this is the rustic name for a barn attached to the house). In the yard, the floor is made of thick pine planks laid on sandy ground, the floor is 20 years old. In spring, ground water is very close (territorial-Meshchersk lowland forests, Ryazan region, Oka State Nature Reserve). This spring there was even water, the boards are wet from the spring. We come to the house in the summer and autumn for mushrooms and berries, the rest of the time no one lives there. This is the background.
Now the story: out of the blue, on one of these very boards, just in the middle of the board (not at the junction of the boards) a clot of mass appeared ... um...obscene appearance. Immediately were estimated options that it is a). the neighbor's chicken has come in (sometimes they are laid here); b). the neighbor's cat ate something wrong (although she eats chicken breast and cottage cheese from the village); c). joj and g). oh, or a viper crawled in - we often have guests-they catch mice. The forest is the same. Well, okay, I got this crap out of the way. And then I remembered how in 2005-2006 we were sitting on a bench under an oak tree near this house, and then suddenly the same mass appeared right on the bench, we didn't even have time to notice how it ended up there. The consistency, color - as thick not boiled condensed milk, we still drive each other began, like fuck you poured condensed milk on the bench?! Then, trying to find out its origin, they even wanted to try, but ttt did not dare.
In general, the mass in both cases appeared from thick wet pine boards. At that time, we simply removed it and forgot about it, and then I decided to observe and noted absolutely interesting facts: the mass, as soon as I erased it, immediately began to appear again from... wormholes in the board!!! A hole with a diameter of 2.5 - 3 mm. From the hole, along with the mass, a transparent high-flow liquid was also released, which quickly spread over the board and did not immediately solidify. After drying, there was a trace like after the passage of a slug-a little shiny. The mass stood out right in front of my eyes, and after 10 minutes the amount of mass corresponded to the same before I erased it - about 2-3 cubic centimeters. The smell was completely absent at first, after an hour it began to show up slightly - very weak and almost indescribable, most likely damp and putrid, and apparently came more from the boards than from the mass. The mass after a day did not dry out and was not covered with a crust, and also did not change its color.
After two days, the mass coming out of the wormhole completely stopped.
I don't know who might have caused it, and I can't even guess. A fungus? Too active life activity. Someone's larva? If it is feces - there was no smell, if decomposition products - again, the smell... By the way, Hadrobregmus pertinax, Calathus halensis, Harpalus rufipes, Callidium violaceum and other wood sharpening enthusiasts live in the house in large numbers.

Sorry for the common description, maybe it's not an insect at all...I tried not to miss a single detail.

30.07.2018 21:11, Mantispid

My first thought is some myxomycetes, but they usually have more beautiful fruit bodies, so most likely some fungi

30.07.2018 21:25, MiLLeNium Niobius

Yeah, thanks, Mantispid, you're probably right. I even found a very similar Trembling brain (Tremella encephala). What is not found on Earth!
