Hi everybody. Tell me what kind of miracle is in the photo.
15.09.2021. Territorial - Western Belarus (Grodno region)
A parasitic rider emerged from the caterpillar of the antique volnyanka and wove a gray and mottled cocoon. In the background is a gall of oak nutcracker.

That's the story. Thank you so much for your reply. I was confused, because the egg looks like a road or ground wasp, and the caterpillar looks like someone else entirely.
By the way, yes, only the shell remains of the caterpillar...

Why cocoonworm? Of the European caterpillars, it is more similar to Trichosea ludifica.

Indeed, it is very similar to Trichosea ludifica. This year's event was massive. A caterpillar species met for the first time. Thanks!

05.10.2021 3:14, vidjl

Yes, Trichosea ludifica, by age 4 it was immediately visible, the previous, probably the third age was not seen before. Here, now thanks to you, the photo has appeared smile.gif

Looked - well, very similar. If not her, then someone from close relatives. It is highly likely that my caterpillars fed on linden trees, as they often found linden petals clamped in the soles of their abdominal legs. But Nycteola asiatica does not have such a food plant. Which of its relatives with similar caterpillars feeds on linden?

And before that on Lepiforum all eyes looked - there are no such. But it's just that it's not in scoops there. But in the atlas "Scoops of Ukraine" by Zoya Klyuchko-in scoops eek.gifAnd in my recently sent article for publication, this type of wasp prey is listed as Noctuidae gen. sp. How critical is this?

Thank you very much for your help in identifying it.
At the beginning of August, there were a lot of such caterpillars on the poplar.
And later (August 30) I found the butterfly Nycteola asiatica.

Oh, I know that very well. Latibulus argiolus. Only it's not a pupa, but a cocoon with a larva inside. Shine a bright flashlight on it or put it in the sun - you will see an interesting phenomenon.

Unfortunately, this cocoon was found several years ago, but if I find it again, I will definitely shine a flashlight on it.
