The Faculty of Biology was the first faculty of the university as it was opened in 1916. Today it consists of 9 departments which are the Department of Botany, Department of Zoology, Department of Ecology, Department of Biochemistry and Plant Physiology, Department of Biochemistry and Human and Animal Physiology, Department of Molecular Biology and Immunology, Department of Biophysics, Department of Biomedicine, Department of Neurodynamics and Neurobiology (the three latter are structuredly at Biophysics and Biomedicine department). In 2010 the university entrance competition for places was 8,8 persons to the Biology program, 3,4 to the Biophysics and 9,1 to the Ecology.
In 2002 the Research Institute for Molecular Biology and Regional Ecology was opened by the Faculty, in 2009 the University got the National Research University status.
