On February 16 “butterfly” artist Paul Villinski came to Centre Avenue Elementary School (East Rockaway, New York) and made a good thing: namely, he installed a cobalt-blue butterfly sculpture. They obviously could not let him leave empty-handed, so he happened to show them his artwork while students shared their dreams.

American artist Paul Villinski creates his artwork using anything he could find such as crushed cans, police barriers and clothing to recycle all this rubbish into butterflies. His works have been exhibited in various galleries nationwide, including recently Museum of Arts and Design in New York and Prospect 1 International Art Biennial in New Orleans. Paul was invited to Centre Avenue school by means of the PTA memorial fund (Parent-Teacher Association) that was set up for a former student of the school.

“Paul offered us the art, his professional installation and his time to teach the students,” said teacher Linda Grace. “He donated three books of his art — one for our library, one for me for giving him the opportunity to be part of this project, and one for the student’s parents. His butterflies represent joy and happiness — words used to describe this child who was always smiling!”
