Dear Colleague,
You might be aware of the incident of the arrest of Dr. Petr Švácha, the scientist who is arrested by the forests officials in West Bengal, India for collecting Beetles and beetle larvae in Singalila National Park, Darjeeling. They have apparently been accused of collecting for the 'Chinese
Medicine market', and the beetles they have collected have been valued at 6000-7000 rupees EACH SPECIMEN!

Petr Svacha is well known Entomologist and is a world-recognised specialist on Coleoptera larvae and a serious academic and we don't think that he was
collecting insects for any commercial purpose.

Petr Švácha is one of the best specialists in the world on larval coleoptera, and it is certain in our opinion that he was not
collecting for any commercial purposes. So obviously this could be a misunderstanding, as these will be insects (probably cerambycidae larvae)
with no commercial value.
Meantime we realize that Dr. Svacha has erred in attempting to sample material in a Protected Area of a foreign country without properly enquiring about its permit requirements and other legalities. Yet, considering his reputation among the scientific community as a Scientist with impeccable credentials and his old age and frailty, we feel he should not be punished any more.
So we request you to sign this petition
His case is coming up in the court again on 7th July. So it will be great if you can sign before 12 noon (IST) 4th July.
