please sign a petition in their defense (urgent - until July 4):

(in Today's Nature about the same thing. Sort of like Petr Švácha-editor of Eur. J. Entomol....)

Please do sign up this petition online

Dear Colleague,

You might be aware of the incident of the arrest of Dr. Petr Švácha, the scientist who is arrested by the forests officials in West Bengal, India for collecting Beetles and beetle larvae in Singalila National Park, Darjeeling. They have apparently been accused of collecting for the 'Chinese

Medicine market', and the beetles they have collected have been valued at 6000-7000 rupees EACH SPECIMEN!

Petr Svacha is well known Entomologist and is a world-recognised specialist on Coleoptera larvae and a serious academic and we don't think that he was
collecting insects for any commercial purpose.

Pl. visit http://www.esnips.com/web/PetrSvacha to see the letter of support we have received from his institute head and others who know him well as well as some of his publications

Petr Švácha is one of the best specialists in the world on larval coleoptera, and it is certain in our opinion that he was not
collecting for any commercial purposes. So obviously this could be a misunderstanding, as these will be insects (probably cerambycidae larvae)
with no commercial value.

Meantime we realize that Dr. Svacha has erred in attempting to sample material in a Protected Area of a foreign country without properly enquiring about its permit requirements and other legalities. Yet, considering his reputation among the scientific community as a Scientist with impeccable credentials and his old age and frailty, we feel he should not be punished any more.

So we request you to sign this petition

His case is coming up in the court again on 7th July. So it will be great if you can sign before 12 noon (IST) 4th July.

To sign this petition pl. go to the url http://www.PetitionOnline.com/wgircn2/petition.html and follow the instructions.

We further request you to forward this mail and url to other colleagues.

Thank you,

There is news from India.
As reported novinky.cz Petr Švácha is acquitted and released, but his partner is sentenced to 3 years.
Wildness. There are simply no words.

wildness in what? what is released or what is planted?

I do not know all the details, although I have read several articles about them, but what do educated people think, advertising their services on the Internet, when they go to collect insects in the national park in INDIA, from where they have not even received material for the definition for a couple of years, because there are strict laws on the protection of biological resources?!?!?!

naturally, in the fact that it is planted. And, I must say, India's justice system is inadequate. If you want to justify it, then justify it. Indian judges are like mischievous children: "Do they sign petitions? all right, let one go home, and let the other go on time. Let one be painfully ashamed, and the second will be painfully offended." They showed, in short, who is in charge there and everything.

I personally think that it was not necessary to put them away - it was too cruel, but as far as I know, it was the Coachman who collected for sale, and Petr Švácha collected for the book. There is a difference.

I may be wrong....

Blow up the Indian government! :D (and Moldovan at the same time)

25.09.2008 22:18, Salix

You need to think more positively. They could have been shot, but they just put them in jail. 3 years-garbage, by and large. One was released altogether. You should be happy, not moaning.

Tu Ripper. Think when you write something like this. If something happens to the Indian or Moldovan government now, you may have to collect petitions in your defense.

3 years-bullshit??? to spend 3 years in an Indian prison, where a year, you can say for 2 goes, if not more? I don't know, I don't know...

25.09.2008 23:14, Salix

Where does this awareness come from-were you in an Indian prison?

26.09.2008 0:15, RippeR

What do you mean they could have been shot? 0_o Life on Earth might never have ended.. and so on..... Don't give too much importance to things just because they might have been......

of course, it is better not to say a lot of unnecessary words, but in this case this is nonsense )))

only those who have been in prison can say what it means to be in prison.. In general, I think it is not necessary to talk about this topic. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.. But unfortunately, prison "kills" many people, and in a year..

Duc evolution, selection... The fittest survive. Including Indian smile.gifprisons

26.09.2008 10:38, RippeR

then you should put everyone in jail..... so that only the strongest and fittest are left.

Yeah. To do this, Iosif Vissarionovich must be revived - he has very extensive experience in jailing and shooting, including scientists

26.09.2008 12:49, Alexandr Rusinov

Duck seems to be, as I understood from the posts above, the scientist was just released, and the merchant was put in jail. So, we don't need to cover up commerce with "beating scientists". In my opinion, for commercial collectors, getting into a local prison is a form of professional risk and you need to be prepared for this. And yet, it seems to me that those who are most indignant-subconsciously try on this share for themselves and the indignation begins - "Our people are beaten"

you can imagine the conditions in India, a poor country, even though it has nuclear weapons... and I don't think the conditions in prison would be normal...

Yes, they try it on... Although I personally have nothing to do with the insect trade.
