An amazing observation was made by paleoentomologists who studied data on 5,5 thousand extinct representatives of the order that lived on Earth for the last 300 million years. Dividing them into families, and grouping the families by time of existence (in increments of 25 million years), scientists stated that during all this time there were absolutely 214 beetle families on the planet, of which 179 survived to our time.

Ancient predatory cockroach found in a piece of amber

A predatory mantis-like cockroach that lived during the time of the dinosaurs and hunted at night was found by paleontologists in a 100-million-year-old piece of solidified resin.
As the researchers report in an article in Geologica Carpathica, writes Yu. Rudny (www.vesti.ru), the insect is a representative of a new for science, but now extinct family of predatory cockroaches.
Scientists led by Peter Vršanský of the Geological Institute of Bratislava (Slovakia) found the creature in a piece of amber in a mine in Myanmar and named it Manipulator modificaputis.
The cockroach had a long neck that allowed its head to move freely in all directions. Manipulator modificaputis also had long legs, meaning it was most likely actively chasing prey.

During the early Cretaceous period, when this insect also lived on Earth, many branches of predatory insects similar to cockroaches evolved. But, as paleontologists note, only one branch has survived to this day and is represented today by praying mantises. They have the same front legs, and they are relatives of modern cockroaches, writes New Scientist.
