Limenitis populi

Base gallery. Lateral/Underside. Alive insect.

Photo, and identified by: Alexsandr Martukov. Image without retouching at the website

Date and time, location shooting/catching: 2012-07-23 00:00:00, Vologda region, Velikoustyugsky district, Orlovskoye settlement, unpaved dry road between the villages of Chernevo and Tomashevo.

Photographer's comment: In this view, the characteristic ribbed "veins" of the wing structure are clearly visible. The butterfly coloring book is also interesting. According to an important observation of more experienced colleagues, it turns out that males are more likely than females to fall to the ground. In 2012, for about five kilometers, I counted a dozen limenitis populi fluttering along the road, spooked from the sand and gravel embankment by our car.
