While writing a thesis on the Geometridae moths of the Tver region (Russia), I collaborated with Elena M. Antonova (Zoological Museum of Moscow State University). She was the biggest expert on Geometrids (at least for the European part of Russia). I've got problems with distinguishing Dysstroma truncata and D. citrata. From Elena M. Antonova I heard something like this: "Don't worry, you couldn't tell the difference even by their genitals, so let's call them truncata". On this site I see that these two species are represented separatly. The question appears: how contemporary science (and who exactly) distinguishes these species?
