Imago Habitus and Differences from alike species
- The length of the forewing is from 2.6 to 2.8 cm. On the upper side of the wings is a black-and-white chessboard-like pattern. Females have a lighter, yellowish underside of their wings, and are larger than males. On the underside of the wings of galatea there are spots — one on each front and a whole row on the back. Central Europe is hardly characterized by at least one species with a similar color, but in Southern Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor there are similar colored species. The view is very variable. North Africa is characterized by the subspecies lucasi Ramb, while the southern part of its range is characterized by procida Herbst, which has a reduced light wing pattern. [85].
General info about Imago
- Melanargia galathea flies on dry slopes, clearings, forest roads, in hilly areas with limestone soils and in mountains at an altitude of up to 2000 m. It is active on hot days, especially at noon, flying, often sits on the flowers of the bark beetle. [85].
Imago lifespan
- Adult years: end of June-August. [85].

Larva food plants / other food objects
- Gramineae. [28].
- Личинки Melanargia galathea питаются на мягких злаках — тимофеевке (Phleum), в частности, тимофеевке луговой, бухарнике (Holcus), пырее, еже и других. [85].
Larva lifespan
- Larvae life time: September-June. [85].
Pupa
- The pupa is ovate, smooth, yellowish in color, and bears two raised dots on the sides of the body. [85].
Egg
- Eggs are laid on leaves (and even scattered) without any attachment, which can cause them to fall to the ground. [85].
Overwintering stage
- The caterpillar overwinters. [85].
