Friends, please help me determine if not to the species, then at least to the genus (but better to the species).
Photo here - http://www.vokrugsveta.ru/photo/image/6488/
Made in Spain.

I've seen motleywings with scary "spiders" on their wings, but with midges – this is something new. Indeed, if someone bites a fly in this "midge" - the wing will suffer. How to continue flying? The meaning is not entirely clear.

And another question – have you ever met flies with any unusual mimicry (murmurs with their stripes do not count)? What were they called?

Thank you.

Capitites ramulosa Lw.

Alas, the opinion that a predator will peck her husband in the roof is not based on anything, it's just such a memobike, invented by someone and actively replicated, like "tyaglomuravy Marikovsky". The radial pattern on the wings of mottledwings most likely creates some similarity with the leaf wrapper of the inflorescence of compound flowers, but no more. Don't look for adaptive expediency where it doesn't exist. The wing/body pattern is more important for recognizing your own appearance and scaring away strangers on a food resource - that's the whole short story...

This topic is dedicated to ktyr the giant (Satanas gigas). I would like to hear about meeting it in nature, talk about its behavior, its protected status in various regions of the former USSR, see various images of it, etc. Any information on this unique fly is welcome)))

This is a miracle)))

it would be interesting to see this creature in person, otherwise only stories.. As far as I know, he lives in the steppes?

And what is the situation with this species in the Donetsk region? In Ukraine, it was observed in some steppe and forest-steppe regions. Many of them speak on the sands of the Kherson region. Horror as you want to see them in nature and take a picture, and it is not applicable for eating some beetles )))

I haven't seen it once. I have a copy in my collection from the north of the region in the 1970s. But, I think, if you look specifically, they are still there.

If this piece of iron is the size of a dragonfly, then this year in the Kherson region in Aleshkovsky sands 18.06 I saw them, and not just one, at first I didn't even understand what it was,I even tried to catch it, and then I. Kostyuk suggested that these are such huge ktyri.

20.10.2010 9:17, Pirx

By the way, there is a topic called "Interesting flies". I suggest, in order not to multiply the essence, to put ktyr there. I call on Bolivar!

And how to distinguish it from similar species? Just by size? And then I met and very large and a little smaller and even smaller. The largest ones live on Tarkhankut.

In the European steppes, it is the only one that is so gigantic. But there are a bunch of similar gray genera and species, smaller in size. Only on "Green".

Yes, this is the same "fascist". It attacks any insects, even much larger than itself, because it has a highly toxic saliva. Who felt the bite of this agile 5 cm fly, when she did not want to give up (rhyme))), they say the sensations are unforgettable))). It attacks even such agile predators as rocker dragonflies. In the literature, Aeshna grandis - one of our largest dragonflies-is cited as its victim!!! Yes-this is a real aerial pirate!!!

Good photos. But I want to ask you to write label data, where these animals come from. In case of possible publication, and I want to write a review on this species in the fauna of Ukraine soon, I will definitely refer to you.

First , almost all data about the place of capture can be viewed on labels. The nas.item is the worst visible
item. - this is Stepanovka Pervaya ( Priazovsky district, Zaporizhia region, Ukraine.)

Secondly, even when communicating virtually, you want to have some idea about the other person.
This data is usually viewed in your personal data confused.gif

Third-here is a brief description from the CCU -
- Very large (body length 35-50 mm) oblong flies with a uniform
gray-pollinated body covered with white and black hairs and bristles and
transparent wings. Representatives of the genus are characterized by an elongated (oblong)
proboscis and the third and fourth radial veins bent forward,
which end at the top of the wing.

Fourth – I am "tormented by vague suspicions" that the picture from post # 2 and the link from okoem are not Satanas gigas

Fifth - once again I post a photo with a scale – well, a very large, monotonous gray fly wink.gif
IMG_0588_ik.jpg

Sixth – everyone who comes to Melitopol in the middle of July of any year will be able to get
together with me to the habitat of Satanas gigas beer.gif

It is not for nothing that you are "tormented by vague suspicions", because the picture from post #2 is really not Satan (a small puncture)frown.gif, but in the pictures on the link from okoem probably Satanas gigas. smile.gif

I'll post the first description of this type umnik.gifsoon

Today I observed this beast in the tugayas of the Syr Darya (south of the Kzyl-Orda region). I tried to film it, but unfortunately I didn't succeed. The size is very impressive.

I wonder what size its larvae are and who these same larvae prey on?

It seems that in this article someone N. S. Dekhtyarev (perhaps Pirx knows something about it) writes that the larvae of gigas eat the larvae of the marble crunch Polyphylla fullo, as well as the larvae of other scarabaeids (probably crushers). That's who would get this article... It would be interesting to read.

I do not know who it is, nor do my acquaintances. But the fact that the larvae of Satan hunt the larvae of Khrushchev is known from the literature, including the Soviet one.

It's hard not to notice a fly or confuse it with something once you see it. In the Odessa region, it is found in the virgin steppe (extremely rare, I didn't catch it myself, but they caught it when I was there, I saw the material) and on the seaside sands (locally, this year I found a site where I met more than 5 ktyri in half an hour). Larvae of marbled crustaceans and anoxia are also present there.

Thanks! Here, however, somewhere there was a topic "Interesting flies" - lucce used both my and your message (I call Bolivar! mol.gif ). These adorable little flies were easily Googled. The species, it turns out, was described from caves 62 years ago, but since then it has not been collected. Larvae in bat poop, imago-feed on the skin secretions of the same mice. Krosavchegi.
