Why does P. brassicae have a light color?

Community and ForumInsects biology and faunisticsWhy does P. brassicae have a light color?

The actual question is in the title of the topic.
Why does this whitefly have light wings? You can see better for the birds. They should have eaten them all. Moreover, other types of whiteflies have dark forms.

What are the experts ' opinions?

They sit on white flowers.

A lot of photos are where they sit on green leaves. For example, on cabbage.

I didn't notice that the birds tried to actively feed on cabbage leaves and other whiteflies. It seems to me that these butterflies, if not poisonous, then have an unpleasant taste and birds avoid them.

Interesting idea. can anyone tell you for sure?

Randall, have you noticed that almost all butterflies have protective coloration only on the underside of their wings? In my opinion, this means that butterflies have to be wary of their enemies, mainly when they are at rest. But in flight to catch them to natural enemies (I exclude a person smile.gif) extremely difficult. In any case, I can immediately recall only the attempts I saw to hunt gray wagtails for flying butterflies, and they were very ineffective. Again, according to observations, birds with difficulty and not for the first time catch even a May beetle flying during the day, and its maneuverability and flight speed are incomparable with butterflies. And the coloring of the upper side of the wings can have both a warning and an attractive color.

Tolkyo I've seen butterflies eat birds in flight lately.. oops, i.e. e on the contrary..

About the state of rest, I liked it.
Nevertheless, it is extremely difficult to notice a white squirrel sitting on the grass, sometimes even at close range.

"...ate birds..."lol.gifAnd it is difficult to notice, so the underside of their wings just has a patronizing color. So which birds successfully ate butterflies? And what butterflies?

no, well, bulyanka on the green grass.. and they are that from below that from above approximately.. equally white. But they somehow know how to turn so sideways that it is not noticeable.. The same golubyanka - plebeiusov saw Sutra on the grass-was not noticeable, but if you look closely, and notice a couple, then everything is clear.. and the birds of the grandmother without movement do not care at all often-ignore smile.gif

birds, if I'm not mistaken, swallows, once in my opinion there was a sparrow. I don't remember everything anymore. Butterflies.. especially I don't remember frown.gif

http://zooex.baikal.ru/butterfly/pieridae.htm "You can see pretty well here.

http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pieris - You can see it very clearly here against the green background.

But when they're hiding in the grass, it's hard to find them.. Usually, when the sun goes down, they freeze somewhere and are not visible.. otherwise, everyone would go out in cloudy weather and collect butterflies sitting everywhere.

I walked around at dusk and sometimes saw pigeons sitting...

Well the entomologist's view is not hindered by anything wink.gif
Here we find beetles on the bark and small things anywhere that a bird will not notice with an armed eye smile.gif

But after all, cabbage leaves constantly stay on cabbage? Yes, and there are a lot of them near the water, they gather in whole flocks.

what does it mean constantly on cabbage? I've met cabbage plants a lot of times, but I've never seen cabbage in those places smile.gif

I tried belyanok, have a pleasant sweet taste and mint smell, only very nasty chitin creaks on the teeth. The other day I saw a sparrow hunt for a moth - a spectacular picture, like a motorcycle road with a bull. it wasn't the first time he hit it with his beak. I think the color of whiteflies is important only for their sexual partners, they have no real enemies, except insecticides on cabbage =)

And who are you? Bird or lizard?

I once watched the sparrow's unsuccessful attempts to keep up with Podaliriyom, also, by the way, a bright-looking butterfly.

Really bobochki so cleverly dodge? From the outside, it seems that they flutter slowly. )) Although it's not even easy to catch a net.

That's interesting. Some butterflies have camouflage, while others do without it.

Thank you all for your comments. Especially the T00M, you are a true explorer.

depends on who.. some butterflies are quite easy to catch, leptidae fly into the net themselves.. and some, well, for example podaliriev catch sometimes well, very difficult, you wave the net, twisting it in all directions, and the result is zero-many have a very good perception.

And you will scare, in general write gone.

that's for sure.. fir trees were stolen this year in one place for podaliriyami, and once startled and the heels on the paws only sparkled smile.gif
