Hawk moths of Russia, questions of taxonomy

Community and ForumTaxonomy. ClassificationHawk moths of Russia, questions of taxonomy

Pavel Smirnov, 24.04.2010 13:33

A few theoretical questions for specialists on several species of hawk moth noted in Russia (according to the Sineva catalog)...
1) Hemaris alternata (Butler, 1874) - is it a synonym for affinis or is it an independent species? If the latter, how do they differ?
2) Hemaris soldaitisi (Eitschberger, Danner & Surholt, 1998) - chtoita in general? What is known about this species?
3) Sphingonaepiopsis kuldjaensis (Graeser, 1892) - did they catch it here?

Using the paper" Die Schwarmer der westlichen Palaearktis " by Fritz Danner, Ulf Eitschberger & Bernhard Surholt from 1998, we can say that:
1) H. alternata (Butler, 1874) is an independent species, distinguished by longer sharp rays (inside the translucent areas between the veins) that run from the outer dark edge of the forewing to the base. In affinis, they are still either not detected,or very short.
2) H. saldaitisi (E. D. & S, 1998) a new species with the type locality Zentral-Tuva, Shurmak river, small, with a thin marginal pattern.

I have in my collection one male H. alternata Butler, 1874 with exactly the same label as for the butterfly from the aforementioned book (Tafel. 13, Abb. 13):

Primorye, Ussuriysky district, village Zarechye, 17.08.1995, leg. Chervonenko I.
Photo attached.
The wing pattern is as close as possible to H. radians Walker, 1856 (not counting the color of the basal spot on the top of the hind wings, which is yellow-orange in H. radians)
