Preparations of beetle wings

Community and ForumOther questions. Insects topicsPreparations of beetle wings

hello.

there is a need to prepare preparations of (temporary) Colorado Potato beetle wings for scanning. under the ribs, they are strongly folded in several planes.

can anyone suggest the existence of a method for preparing such drugs?

interested in: liquid for straightening, fixing, getting rid of air bubbles...

Drosophilist colleagues in Novosibirsk stick tape on a slide, but the drosophila wing is smooth and easier there...

Straighten the torn wing, and all cases smile.gif

And if you spread it out under the cover glass??? Like you did before, or the scan won't work?

I tried to spread beetle wings in weak alcohol under binoculars on a transparent die (thanks again to Denis wink.gif), after which I covered it with a second die on top, and in this state I put it between the pages of a thick book for several days. Then the dried wing was glued to the same die, which was pinned on a pin with a beetle. You can also press the top with a die, so that it does not get dusty. For photographing quite yourself...

And I noted an interesting fact for myself - the wing length of the rhino, copra and May is almost the same! a seemingly "not small" Pachylister inaequalis has very small wings (relative to body length), although beautifully darkened wink.gif
anti-gravity among us however.... beer.gif

so, how did I start doing it and what happens:

1. on the glass, in a mixture of alcohol+glycerin, I spread my wings with dissecting needles in the position I need.

2. I cut off a rectangular piece of scotch tape, put it on the wings lying in the liquid, with my fingers (gently) I remove excess liquid from under the scotch tape.

3. I transfer the adhesive tape with the wings glued on to the slide, use my fingers (confidently, but gently) to remove excess liquid from under the tape and (especially!) air bubbles. I bend the edges of the tape and glue them to the back of the slide.

for my needs, 4 pairs of wings will fit on one cover glass.
