hello.

there is a need to prepare preparations of (temporary) Colorado Potato beetle wings for scanning. under the ribs, they are strongly folded in several planes.

can anyone suggest the existence of a method for preparing such drugs?

interested in: liquid for straightening, fixing, getting rid of air bubbles...

Drosophilist colleagues in Novosibirsk stick tape on a slide, but the drosophila wing is smooth and easier there...

And if you spread it out under the cover glass??? Like you did before, or the scan won't work?

I tried to spread beetle wings in weak alcohol under binoculars on a transparent die (thanks again to Denis wink.gif), after which I covered it with a second die on top, and in this state I put it between the pages of a thick book for several days. Then the dried wing was glued to the same die, which was pinned on a pin with a beetle. You can also press the top with a die, so that it does not get dusty. For photographing quite yourself...

I "as a child" had a collection of beetle wings lol.gifslide frames and 2 pieces of scotch tape glued together with each other smile.gifat least right now in the projector tongue.gif

And I noted an interesting fact for myself - the wing length of the rhino, copra and May is almost the same! a seemingly "not small" Pachylister inaequalis has very small wings (relative to body length), although beautifully darkened wink.gif

so, how did I start doing it and what happens:

1. on the glass, in a mixture of alcohol+glycerin, I spread my wings with dissecting needles in the position I need.

2. I cut off a rectangular piece of scotch tape, put it on the wings lying in the liquid, with my fingers (gently) I remove excess liquid from under the scotch tape.

3. I transfer the adhesive tape with the wings glued on to the slide, use my fingers (confidently, but gently) to remove excess liquid from under the tape and (especially!) air bubbles. I bend the edges of the tape and glue them to the back of the slide.

for my needs, 4 pairs of wings will fit on one cover glass.
