Hello, dear forumchane.
I recently read Stephen Hurd's book " Charles Darwin's Barnacle Crab and David Bowie's Spider. How Scientific Names celebrate Heroes, Adventurers, and Villains", ed. Alpina non-fiction, 2021. In particular, there is a chapter where the author gives examples of plants and animals named by scientists after their wives and loved ones, as well as children.
In this connection, the question arose: probably, Russian (then Soviet and Russian) scientists also gave names to the species they discovered, existing or extinct, in honor of their wives and loved ones, as well as children and parents, but I did not find such information on the web. Are you familiar with such examples?
I am interested not only in insects, but also in other representatives of the animal world, but I think the examples with insects were more common.
Also, are there any known cases of "insulting names", when names were given not to honor the nominee, but quite the opposite, or suspicion of them (except for the case of A. Elbakyan)?
Are there any examples of names in your honor? Is it really considered bad form among biologists to give such names? For example, it is considered perfectly normal for a traveler to give their own name to a geographical object that they have discovered.
Thank you.
