how can you breed ordinary flies without using rotten meat? are there any less smelly substrates?

At the dawn of my foggy youth, I worked in a VIZRA in a lab. breeding of insects. Musca domestica and Protophormia sp. were bred. The substrate consisted of bone meal and bran: mixed approximately 50/50 and diluted with water to a dough-like state. I don't remember the details from years ago, but the case was relatively simple.
