Base gallery. Upperside. Pinned specimen.

Photo, and identified by: Vasiliy Feoktistov. Image without retouching at the website

Date and time, location shooting/catching: 2011-07-25 00:00:00, Russia, Moscow reg., Zheleznodorozhny city. leg. Feoktistov V.I.

Photographer's comment: Wingspan: 60 mm. The species is listed in the Red Book of the Moscow Region: http://kkmo2.verhovye.ru/rb/bspozvon/catocala_sponsa.php The 2011 season of the year was remembered for the mass departure of this species throughout the city of Zheleznodorozhny. Which is a very unusual phenomenon: the nearest oak grove is a good 5 km away. from the places where the butterflies appeared, and most sources indicate that oak is the only food plant for caterpillars. However, here and there it is stated that the caterpillar can still develop on Chestnut (Castanea) and Horse chestnut (Aesculus). Apparently, this is just such a case: We have planted many streets and squares with Horse chestnuts. N. B. Since then, I have never seen a Purple Ribbon Tree in my city again.
