Imago Habitus and Differences from alike species

  • Forewing length from 3 to 3.5 cm (wingspan 60-80 mm). The hindwings are purplish in color, and "the band on them is acute-angled, their edge is serrated, and the fringe is unicolored." Or " fringe... spotted and wavy." The forewings are grey-brown, with a greenish tinge. A reniform spot with a double border, itself located between two clear lines, on a light field (under the reniform is another, white, spot).Catocala sponsa is similar in appearance to Catocala dilecta, but slightly smaller in size. For some reason, the most beautiful shape is considered to be f. desponsa — with yellow rear wings. [85].

General info about Imago

  • The purple ribbon beetle loves oak forests, is also found in deciduous-mixed forests, and sometimes even flies to old gardens and parks — if there are old oaks there. The butterfly is active at dusk and at night, when catching in the light it is tolerant of human attention (it is not afraid to the point that it can easily be picked up). [85].

Imago lifespan

The caterpillar's head is grey, with a black transverse stripe. The larva of the crimson order ribbon lives, [85].
