Imago Habitus and Differences from alike species

  • Forewing length from 3.3 to 3.8 cm (wingspan from 70 to 90 mm): the butterfly is noticeably larger than the willow ribbon moth , but smaller than the poplar(Catocala elocata), which it looks like. In addition, the scales on the forewings of the red banded moth are always large (in willow — thin), the light pegment filling the transverse stripes of the fore wings of Catocala nupta is less contrasting, and the pattern in the form of the letter M (or W, whichever you like better) on the outer transverse line is shorter and less sharp, compared to that of C. electa. The median band on the hind wings curves at obtuse angles, the black band along the edge is wide, and the hind wings themselves are brick-red. The fringe on all wings is white and wavy. [85].

General info about Imago

  • Places of summer — trees and shrubs near water bodies, including in villages and even in cities, where it sits on wooden walls and fences. In addition, floodplain and swamp forests. In general, the butterfly does not like arid places, preferring relatively wet habitats. The red ribbon of the order is active at night, when it willingly flies to the light, although it descends slightly away from the light source, and not directly on it. [85].

Imago lifespan

  • From July to September-October. [85].

General info about Larva

  • The caterpillar is dark gray with a reddish tinge, the body length of the red ribbon caterpillar can reach up to 80 mm. On the eighth ring — yellowish with a dark shadow in the back part of the swelling. Unlike C. elocata caterpillars, the dark longitudinal stripes on the body of C. nupta larvae are thinner and less pronounced. Pupates between web-bound leaves in the shelter. [85].

Larva food plants / other food objects

  • Salix. [28].
  • Ива, тополь. [85].

Larva lifespan

  • The caterpillar lives from May to June. [85].

Pupa

  • The pupa is brown, with a blue coating, slender. [85].

Overwintering stage

  • The egg overwinters. [85].
