Imago Habitus and Differences from alike species

  • Wingspan 65-95 mm. Male UP is bluish black, abdomen below barred with red throughout its length, UnF in male with whitish suffusion near tornus. Female is pater black with a large white postdiscal patch on FW (fore-wing) dorsum, paler at upper end, except dark veins. Both sexes of ssp. zaleucus bear white spots on HW (hind - wing) differ to varuna and astorion. Subsp. varuna occurs in the penincular Thailand and Malaisia ​​while asterion distributes from Nepal, Assam to nothern Indo-China.
    Atrophaneura varuna zaleucus (Hewitson, 1865) is in reposioning as a subspecies of P. varuna due to the reason from the study of genitalia. UP is bluish black, male with 3 white submarginal spots on HW. Female has four or five submarginal spots, which are usually longer than those in male on HW. [144].
