- Burdock is found all over Europe, but overwinters only in the southern part of it. Butterflies living north of the Alps migrate annually. In addition to Europe, Vanessa cardui flies all over the world (including Ireland and Iceland), with the possible exception of South America. I.e., it is present in Africa, Asia, Australia, and even the Sandwich Islands... [85].
Imago Habitus and Differences from alike species
- The length of the front wing is slightly less than 3 cm. On the underside of the hind wings there are 5 characteristic eyes. Both sexes are painted the same. [85].
General info about Imago
- Butterflies are found everywhere where thistles and nettles grow, in the mountains they reach an altitude of 2000 m, but they still prefer dry sunny areas of the terrain-steppes, fields and meadows, avoiding dark forests. The thistle moth is a migratory butterfly that arrives in Europe from North Africa in the spring; during such migrations, thistles can fly in huge flocks of up to a hundred individuals per minute. [85].
Imago lifespan
- V. cardui often gives two (from July to August and from August to September), and sometimes even three generations (Reichholf-Rim, 2002), and can occur from May to October (Nidon et al., 1991). Due to long migrations, local butterflies often fly together with immigrants, which makes it difficult to separate them. In Northern Europe and Great Britain, butterflies appear in June, and in southern and western Europe-as early as April (Moukha, 1979). The first generation is from June (from May — Lampert, 2003) to July, the second — from August to September. [85].
General info about Larva
- The caterpillars are highly variable (Moukha, 1979), but generally light or dark gray, with a yellow striped pattern and yellow spines. [85].
Larva food plants / other food objects
- Cirsium, Carduus, Echium, Malva. [28].
- Чертополох, крапива, мать-и-мачеха, бодяк. [85].
Pupa
- The pupal stage lasts about two weeks, the chrysalis itself is gray or brown, with golden spots. Greenish eggs with 16 longitudinal ribs are laid one at a time on the food plant. "Some pupae overwinter." [85].
