"I want to know if there are butterflies in Antarctica." (at least on a peninsula stretching out to South America?)

16.09.2008 20:11, El Cazador

I heard somewhere that there are about 400 species of butterflies in Antarctica.

Wah! Who told you that, dear?! I dare not argue, but I am surprised beyond measure!

In my opinion, only kollembols and proturs live there, and even then only in the north!!! The fact that there are no butterflies in Antarctica is definitely smile.gif

A couple of years ago I read an article about Antarctica, where I don't remember. But it also talked about butterflies and mosquitoes and ticks. I myself was surprised by the number of types (400), so I remembered. Although, if you consider that even flower species live there, why shouldn't there be butterflies? If I remember the source of my awareness, I'll give you a link.

An internet search yielded only sub-Antarctic butterflies (from the islands). And of the flowering plants there is only one grain and a small-premelkoe carnation 5 cm high. Both, essno, are on the Antarctic peninsula.

In the Smolensk region, explosions are not so rare now. However, they are smaller in size than their southern relatives. They appeared a couple of years ago. Then Argyope also appeared.

I thought it was somewhere in the south of the region. I haven't met them in Gagarin district yet.
As I just read on this forum
http://molbiol.ru/forums/index.php?showtop...100#entry774287
and in the south of the Moscow region, Mantis was first discovered.
