The Rider Beetle

Here is an interesting observation (Leningrad region, May 27):
Lemongrass flew up and landed on a dandelion tree. At that moment, it was as if something dark bounced off her. Attracted by this movement, I went over and looked at the butterfly. Everything seems to be normal: a butterfly, slightly battered after wintering, feeds on a flower. Then there's another sharp movement, and a beetle plops down on the butterfly's wing. He landed closer to the top of the wing, moved quickly, and froze in place. The butterfly continued to feed for a while, then flew away with the beetle on its wing. Later, looking at the photo, I noticed numerous injuries to the wing of the lemongrass, which suggest that the beetle has long "straddled" its victim.

Wow, how can a butterfly carry such a large beetle on its wing? Maybe he left right after the butterfly took off?

I didn't notice that the beetle fell off immediately.

And then, as I have already written, the entire wing of the butterfly was "trampled" by a beetle. In this photo, you can see the beetle and the damage to the butterfly wing is larger.

By the way, the beetle is strange, with hind legs like jumping ones. Here you probably need to put this picture in the topic for determining beetles, so that they can tell you what kind of species it is, and then find out what is known about it(or maybe not, but this is something newwink.gif)

the narrow-winged beetle Oedemera virescens, at this time is massively found on flowers. Apparently some bug with a high IQ decided to make life easier for itself and used lemongrass as a means of transportation. The hind legs are not hopping, they are thickened thighs in the male.
