This is a photo of the usual view in the vicinity of Vladivostok. Sometimes they are separated into a separate subspecies Inachis io geisha (although many believe that this subspecies is purely Japanese). I would like to know: is the copy shown different from the European ones?
The photo was taken in early May.

These butterflies are not very variable, in appearance they practically do not differ.

I looked at a couple of dozen illustrations - outwardly, the butterflies are almost indistinguishable. As with most nymphalids, there may be a slight difference in color between species that develop in the pupal stage at different temperatures. At a glance, the geisha's white-purple spots on the outer edge of the forewing are less blurred.

I was also always surprised by this separation of the Far Eastern Inachis io into a separate subspecies. IMHO an artificial taxon.
2Juglans: And who is the author of the description? Not Japanese? They like to highlight "their" populations at all costs ...
P.S. Now I looked closely at the photo posted by sealor - it seems to confirm the sign from the description: the Ukrainian butterfly has clearly less yellow on its wings. But this is only due to the fact that the specimen has lived, the yellowness has faded. And so-the difference is not traced.

The Helene
subspecies is allocated to Stephens. According to the Japanese, the subspecies geisha lives only in Japan. And as for the differences - so everything ultimately rests on the structure of the genitals! Here I have no information.
