Inachis io geisha

Community and ForumTaxonomy. ClassificationInachis io geisha

This is a photo of the usual view in the vicinity of Vladivostok. Sometimes they are separated into a separate subspecies Inachis io geisha (although many believe that this subspecies is purely Japanese). I would like to know: is the copy shown different from the European ones?
The photo was taken in early May.

These butterflies are not very variable, in appearance they practically do not differ.

What are the differences in the subspecies description?

I quote: "Far Eastern specimens are distinguished by more developed yellow and reduced blue spots on the forewings"

I looked at a couple of dozen illustrations - outwardly, the butterflies are almost indistinguishable. As with most nymphalids, there may be a slight difference in color between species that develop in the pupal stage at different temperatures. At a glance, the geisha's white-purple spots on the outer edge of the forewing are less blurred.

I was also always surprised by this separation of the Far Eastern Inachis io into a separate subspecies. IMHO an artificial taxon.
2Juglans: And who is the author of the description? Not Japanese? They like to highlight "their" populations at all costs ...
P.S. Now I looked closely at the photo posted by sealor - it seems to confirm the sign from the description: the Ukrainian butterfly has clearly less yellow on its wings. But this is only due to the fact that the specimen has lived, the yellowness has faded. And so-the difference is not traced.

The Helene
subspecies is allocated to Stephens. According to the Japanese, the subspecies geisha lives only in Japan. And as for the differences - so everything ultimately rests on the structure of the genitals! Here I have no information.
