Field Guide of water Adephaga of the Volga region

Community and ForumTaxonomy. ClassificationField Guide of water Adephaga of the Volga region

Алексей Сажнев, 02.12.2009 11:12

On my site http://assazhnev.narod.ru

We are preparing (for now a kind of "beta version") a determinant of water resources in the Volga region Adephaga - http://assazhnev.narod.ru/adephaga.html

we chose 2 forms - these are the usual theses/antitheses - the text part, and since the Internet capabilities allow - we duplicate the text with a drawing key (the abundance of illustrations is emphasized).

Dear colleagues, we need your help in testing the key - the family identifier is now fully prepared, the pinwheelers-up to the species, the floaters - the key by genera, the subgenus Haliplidius Guignot, 1928 (Haliplus)and the nominative subgenus Haliplus s. str. Latreille, 1802 (Haliplus) key by males.

We will be very grateful for your comments and suggestions, and most importantly, we want to find out how the key "works" and how effective it is. Thank you all in advance.

A very good project, I will test it this week, as there are still some undefined ones, and at the same time I will check certain ones (by good specialists) on these theses.
There is a problem the reference

yes, the subgenus Liaphlus Guignot, 1928 is not ready yet-tomorrow (i.e. today, December 3) we plan to prepare and post it, plus some keys will be supplemented with illustrations

Your opinion on the completed parts of the determinant and the project as a whole

In the list of references, I did not find (maybe I missed) references to the book by A. Yu Isaev "Determinant of coleoptera of the Middle Volga region "(part 1 Adephaga and Myxophaga), 2002, Ulyanovsk.

I used it to determine both vertyachek and floaters. Like it.

Thank you for the comment, really an unacceptable omission, because the first volume was undoubtedly used both in compiling lists and in keys.

So far, I have only checked my modest fees for girinids from five types. I liked the keys.
But in my opinion, the sign of punctuality of the transverse pronotum groove in the G. natator-G. substriatus antithesis is not very convenient. It may be worth replacing it with the more visual one used by M. Holmen (1987).:

Body most elevated near the middle (see side) - G. natator
Body most elevated in front of the middle, behind the pronotum - G. substriatus

Many thanks for the drawing, I think it will be possible to use both this and that attribute.

The definitive table of species of the subgenus Liaphlus Guignot, 1928 is ready - http://assazhnev.narod.ru/liaphlus.html
(so far only the text version and drawings (photos) of genitals)

A drawing key has been prepared for the species of the subgenus Liaphlus Guignot, 1928 - http://assazhnev.narod.ru/liaphlus.html

The botanque remark is taken into account-the feature proposed by M. Holmen (1987)is added - http://assazhnev.narod.ru/gyrinidae1.html

Taking advantage of this position and opportunity, I present to the public several more similar keys for other groups:

genus Arhopalus Serville, 1834 [Spondylidinae, Asemini] - http://assazhnev.narod.ru/arhopalus.html
genus Lebia Latreille, 1802 [Carabinae, Lebiini] Volga Region - http://assazhnev.narod.ru/lebia.html
genus Demetrias (Bonelli, 1810) [Carabinae, Lebiini] Volga Region - http://assazhnev.narod.ru/demetrias.html
genus Dromius (Fabricius, 1787) [Carabinae, Lebiini] Volga Region - http://assazhnev.narod.ru/dromius.html

P.S. I need help preparing a key for the genus Paradromius Fowler, 1887:
we can't find any distinguishing features between longiceps (Dejean, 1826) and suturalis (Motschulsky, 1844)

I looked through the Dromius genus - the keys are good, note!!! - the captions to the illustrations are mixed up (more precisely, the numbers of the drawings are mixed up)

Measurements of longiceps (Dejean, 1826) from the Belorussian population, and suturalis (Motschulsky, 1844) from the Crimea. In other places, populations may have different dimensions and proportions. If you need more clarification, then you can write to your personal account, I don't promise a quick photo right away, but I'll do it if necessary. I just wrote the signs, looking at beetles, I thought to use them in the article, but if necessary, then you can use them. And of course they differ in their genitals.
I. A. Solodovnikov, Vitebsk

1 (2) Larger, 6.0-7.1 mm. The SP/DP index (width to length of the prsp.) is 0.89-0.93 (for DV, the index is 0.83). Nadkr. with extremely delicate grooves, almost completely disappearing to the top. Yellow-white color, translucent during life. The head is only slightly darker than the prsp. On nadkr. the seam is darkened in the form of a thin strip, slightly fusiformly expanding to the top. It is found on salt marshes in reeds, flies well to the light, or is caught by mowing along them.……………….. suturalis (Motschulsky, 1844)

2 (1) Smaller, 5.0-5.45 mm. The SP/DP index (width to length of the prsp) is equal to 0.97-1.01. Nadkr. with clear, in some places gently longitudinally pitted-dotted grooves, fully reaching the apex. Yellow color, translucent during life. The head is much darker than the prsp., dark brown in color. On nadkr. the seam is darkened in the form of a wider strip, greatly expanding towards the top, which is darker than in the previous view. It is marked in the middle zone along the banks of watercourses. When wintering, it is marked quite high from the ground, at a height of 1-2 m in small and dry cracks on the trunks of deciduous trees..................... longiceps (Dejean, 1826)

Thank you very much, and the article is already in print or prepared? it would be possible to refer to it, otherwise it is somehow inconvenient for me to get ahead of print publications (dc is not yet my own) on the Internet.

I have a photo, but the beetles are only habitually, I don't know if they are suitable for this, longiceps with eurocarabid.de, suturalis was sent to me by E. V. Komarov (many thanks to him once again).

Therefore, if, Igor, you don't mind, then you can post the key together, or hold it until your article is published.

I wrote an article, then abandoned it as something, you can create a key together if you don't mind and put it in the net - I look at the most appropriate place. The main thing is immediately accessible to many and understandable, if that can be immediately refined and still make it better. If you need help writing other keys, I will be happy to help, only some ground beetles cost more than 4,700 species

Yes, I think we will make a joint key, but we need photos of grooves and other signs, if possible. Photos/drawings of genitals

The tables are wonderful, there is something to see, thank you.
Small suggestions, it would also be nice to add information like "everywhere, frequent, rare, only at this point", and place the tables for definition on the page (layout) in a more readable form (a different font and a larger field). I think that's what you're planning.

amara, thank you for your suggestions - we are always happy to hear the opinions of others. Information on the distribution and ecology of species will be posted after the definition tables are prepared. And at the expense of the font and layout, we will think Vesta and choose the most optimal varian possible. Thanks
