Gentlemen and fellow colleagues!
I've seen purchase offers on the Zinovsky website for a long time

"Butterflies of Russia" CD (or something like that),

"Determinant of Palearctic Cryptocephalus", etc.
I have long harbored the idea of creating such a disk and software

your own group - with illustrations, photos, and maps

areas and an interactive identifier. Program

I can't do it at all. There is no time for this in the near future

will not be. So I thought and searched for programs that

they would have helped me complete my plan. At first I thought that

this is possible in MS Access, but recently decided to

make it in the form of a website (again a question for those who know -

choosing between Adobe Golive 7 MacromediaDreamWeaver

MX). Maybe there is an alternative way

create a database with links to photos and viewpoints

essays, definitions, etc.? Came across a good thing

By mantis (Mantis, I think) but as far as I understand,

this is just an example of creating such a database without the ability to

radical restructuring for the "own monastery". I beg

advise - what program is available for these users

choose your goals (or you'll have to learn

programming?,,).
Thank you all in advance for any comments.

Yes, Mantis is a great thing!
In fact, I see it this way: there is a relational database, for example-Postgre, mysql or something else. And a "muzzle" is made to this database - a visual representation. Further options are possible: a database on the server in the Internet or a database on the user's local machine. When you place a database on the network, you can create a WEB interface for it and anyone can use it. You can also write a client application that will send requests over the network to the database, but this, I think, is not necessary for nafih.
Hosting the database on the user's machine doesn't require an Internet connection, but it does require a DATABASE server. And, when using a local Web interface, there is also a" service " for servicing this interface.

It seems to me that it is optimal to make 2 versions of the product: web-oriented, with browser access, and local-with a full-fledged application. That is, one base and two "faces" to it.

Now to the question of how I can help. In general, I understand the DBMS. I'm not a guru, I'm just learning, but something is working out ;-) I have experience developing graphical applications using Qt under Linux/windows. That is, I am theoretically ready to create such a product on a local machine. You need to recruit a team, but you can't do it in one or two people.

I have long harbored the idea of creating such a disk for my own group - with illustrations, photos, maps of areas and an interactive identifier.

In ZINA, everything is turned to the database. But I am not sure that this is the optimal form of presenting information in such a case. Maybe this is my subjective opinion, as a person in the database who does not understand anything, or maybe...
Databases are really well used in online stores, lists of names, addresses, etc., electoral lists, accounting... Especially where the search query is important, where a search form is needed. A disk with photos, texts, and hypertexts (texts with links, such as keywords) is easier and more convenient to create as a simple website written in primitive html.
There are a lot of programs like Mantis, but I doubt that you will find one that would satisfy you 100%, and you will hardly be able to fix it.

A database is needed where it is convenient to present data in tabular form. Accordingly, you need to decide what should be and see if the database is needed or not. But here's a simple example: the insect atlas. In fact - a table with the fields "view" and"image". For each type of field: "Genus", "species name", "first description", "year of description" and a bunch of other things. So the database is needed.

Yes, the WEB interface is easier to understand than such tables, but getting data from the table in a digestible form is a matter of technique, while using a DBMS or not is a conceptual decision on which the entire project will depend.

Whether to use a DBMS or not is a conceptual decision that the entire project will depend on.

Absolutely.
A database is needed where it is convenient to present data in tabular form.

I absolutely agree with you.
So the database is needed.

I still insist that this project can be implemented no less successfully without resorting to the database.

Then we are waiting-with the Technical Specification; -)

Mylabris, what group are you going to create a database for?

Abscess beetles.
