Supplement about the Philippine Expedition in 1996.We flew from Manila to Cagayan de Oro (ostro Mindonao). We hired a jeep-$ 60 went to Mount Kitonglad (according to the maps there is a virgin forest preserved). We drove for a long time-the landscape around-only vegetable gardens. We arrived-there is a mountain peak-an untouched longline forest, but a nature reserve. We stayed in the house-a big family-we were given a room-we rolled out a rashen drink on the table. In the morning we were sent to the chairman of the local collective farm (community). He allowed to catch the light outside the reserve. And in the afternoon to walk around the reserve-but only under the supervision and accompanied by a boy-he ordered the boy to pay a salary for the escort for the day - $8(so that he would look after us, that we did not catch anything).Decent money for a kid at their prices and earnings. We went to the mountain in the forest in the afternoon.Fly Troides rhadamantus, T. magellanus at the top-8-30 meters. They rarely go down to the bottom-fly over a wide road.Papilio rumanzovia among the trees overgrown with prickly vines scurry.Whiteflies Hebomoia fly in the field near the forest. It's funny-sometimes a white female flies, followed by a string of 10 males.A colorful ribbon in the air flies at a height of 4 meters. We need to catch up-jump up and put the net in front of the string in the air.A full net.Healthy cicadas buzz-like high-voltage wires.Viper snakes scurry around. There, by the way, the largest cobra lives-spitting poison-5 m long.A story about her-from Sergey Murzin-we were in the Philippines with him.In Vietnam, they were traveling in a truck and a healthy cobra crawled across the road.We just drove along it-after 5 km we stopped in the village of vvetnamskaya.Hear from under the car hissing dissatisfied. We wound it on the cardan shaft. She unwound from the gimbal and with her intestines released, with an extremely dissatisfied look, she tried to spit poison in them for a long time(spitting cobra).Cool there are large leaf racers-you will be tortured by catching them-they see far away, they are timid.Flies on the fly grab-healthy-1-1.5 cm long body.Funny ground beetles are elongated-there are many species there. We heard the voice of the smallest deer in the world-20-40 cm at the withers.
We were not allowed to fish in the reserve. My grandfather, the head of the community, sent the nearest representative office of the reserve to the city to get permission. There, they began to show us pieces of paper issued to the Americans once with a clever look. The text showed prices for a resolution- $ 1500.Politely said goodbye and caught outside the reserve.

There is an uncle(now he is under 50 years old).I traveled around the country a lot. From the western to eastern borders.
Wed Asia, Altai, Sayan, Primorye, D Vostok, Yakutia. He visited me in Saratov a couple of times.
It's not listed on the forum. He was in the Pamirs between Chechekty and Akbaytal Lane.Там Parnassius simo,P.staudingeri
kiritchenkoi,Baltia shawii,Colias eogene,Papilio machaon,Lycaenidae.I put up a tent in the gorge
-7-8 km from the highway and climbed to the top every day.Approximately, this year is 1993-94.
Perestroika times have already affected those regions.A can of canned food could get you killed in
some places. He sits in the evening at the primus-soup cooks-shepherds and young animals (20 years old) ride
up on horses.One with a carbine.The usual hospitality-sit down-soup pokhlebali, tea tasted.
His tent and sleeping bag cost money-in general, such an unobtrusive conversation went over tea-they say the man
will share right now with us what is rich and the Kirghiz trunk drives unobtrusively.A peasant is alone in the mountains - a camp
of shepherds 15 km from his tent.He hit the one with the carbine on the head and he fell. The second
man jumped on his horse and rode away. The man quickly packed the tent in a backpack and went up to the dry land.
I lay down in the rocks and watched as the stunned man came to.The second man rode up an hour later with a band of men, all with guns.
They rode their horses through the valley until dark, searching for the entomologist. The peasant at night on the slopes, sypukham
(without going down into the valley went in the direction of the lane.Akbaytal.I spent three days walking at night(during the day I slept in
loose snow). You can't get to the border guards in Murghab-you have to go down to the valley.Only after Akbaytal I caught
a border guard car and left for Osh.Another famous person(who wrote a good book
on Rhopalocera) had some adventures there.Another entomologist was shot in the Western Pamirs on Panj.
The driver of the ride on which he was traveling was wounded from a kalash.

My last story really happened.Think about all the men-is it worth risking places? The line or facet must be real.Risk is a noble cause, and it is not interesting to live without it.But.There were a lot of things.Romance.Perhaps someone has heard about Kostya Khomichenko. He died in Dushanbe after a season in the Pamirs. From April(Parnassius honrathi) to August, he fished without a raid in the mountains. He was seen in July-from the food he had only processed cheese.I didn't know him personally-I was told.

There was a story in May 2002.We went with a friend all over the Black Sea coast.Allancastria caucasica view and ground beetles. We drove my top - five car along the entire Black Sea coast-from Anapa to Adler-stopping in every town. His shoes were stolen last night from under a car in Loo.He came to Sochi barefoot-we went to the bazaar and bought him a pair of boots. We arrived in Gelendzhik. We left the car on the main street near the embankment and went for a walk.We took a walk-it's time to go to bed in the morning. The place is noisy-the center-they drove the car to the next quiet, dark street-silence, peace. When you get tired, undress and sleep in the car-a pleasure. At 5 a.m. sharp-BAM, BAM, BAM.So savory on the brain-we already jumped with the car.The church is nearby-for some reason they started hammering the bells at 5 am.We listened to the bells with twisted eyes and went back to sleep. And 12 hours behind the wheel is no joke.At six o'clock sharp, we still got a call-we didn't have the strength to swear on this quiet street anymore. They smoked in silence and looked at each other with stupefied square eyes.Again skochevryazhili-and an hour later we have this bell again took out the soul-the doors in the wheelbarrow open to swear, and already nizya-parishioners prut crowd already pancake. In general, we did not get enough sleep lightly then. Of course, I've heard about Kostya Khomyachenko. A tragic story. In principle, most singles are very risky.

One graduate student from a remote Siberian city (a 3rd-year graduate student) came to Novosibirsk and stayed with a hospitable Ustyuzhanin. Petya was not at home. His wife Luda says to the guy:
- There is a great ACE book about butterflies. Look at this.
He looked, lit up and said:
- I'll go to the book world and buy it.
Luda (a doctor, not a lepidopterologist) answers:
"I'm sure there's no book in the store."
The guy insists on leaving. I came back without a book.
Then, at a family dinner in the evening, he asks:
- I thought for a long time, I still can't understand why Luda called the book Tuzovskaya...

Hello Roman.Photo Altai super.Tuzov's book is a thing-a cool thing.Agree?Thank you very much to Vasily for this work. And to all the men-co-authors, Sochivko for great photos thank you.

By the way, on Saturday there was a program on Channel 2 "Jurmala 2009", so there was one comedian who read the very jokes that you are on molbiol.ru/forums published it."I really liked the Moscow Zoo. We stayed there with our son for two weeks.
"Shershe al fam? in Egypt - fancy, but for some reason on the 2nd and

is a special trick to make the Russians feel at home?"

I just received this message from a friend.Did anyone watch the show?
Our(your) stories are already being told in Jurmala without our knowledge.

A Mongolian botany professor, a good friend of mine, once suggested it to me. You work on butterflies, don't you? We have one very important butterfly-moth. Ate my hat, eats the yurt of the shepherds. You need to work on how to deal with it. Help me get on TV. If you really do something, you will become a national hero of Mongolia.
Once again, when I asked him why the Mongols do not catch fish, he answered
: There are sheep, why torment yourself

18.11.2009 15:21, Yakovlev

Duplicated from the page about entomology abstracts

A human Ph. D. student shows a human Ph. D. student a South American pigeon - teklina hefty, which any child would look at and immediately say that he flies either in Africa or in Brazil... Both are butterfly people.
And he says-yes, I caught it in the Altai in the summer.
The second gaped, asking-where??? Then he adds, " I'm not surprised at anything anymore

A female candidate of biological Sciences, now a dbn entomologist, looking at Apollo Stubbendorf in the collection, says - you shouldn't have put a hawthorn tree on the sailboats. The owner of the collection declares-this is a sailboat. To which the entomologist responds extremely indignantly
-What are you saying-I already know my objects.

Human Doctor of Biological Sciences describes subspecies of the THIRD ORDER in fish.

A friend of mine drove like this. His partner, the professor's son , is a terrible drinker. Yelled all the money. And the time was Soviet, no Western unions, no plastic cards... They almost starved to death.
And I knew this story about 7 years ago. I would have known I'd run into this man. The professor died, and I, as a book lover, was informed about this-they say the library is being sold out. I left for Novosibirsk urgently and came to this house. This is the apartment of a respected entomologist, Doctor of Biological Sciences, who has trained many specialists.
I was scared, although 90 kg of live weight, 3 meetings with a bear, the practice of a forensic psychiatrist does not seem to allow me to be very scared... It was a terrible hangout. DOZENS of people sleeping on the floor, the smell of long-unwashed bodies, sea buckthorn, vomit...
I was greeted by the very person who had drunk the money on the trip - my son. Faded eyes, long-unwashed gray hair, a scraggly beard, lost teeth...
My keen eye noticed one good book - Kozlov's Mongolia and Kam. Excellent condition. I think-says a thousand-I'll buy it, if more-I'll bargain. I ask:
- How much it costs.
The answer disarmed me
- a twenty-something old book...
After buying half a pack of books, I got out of the stench, breathed in the frosty air and experienced the deepest guilt complex in front of my now deceased colleague. It wasn't until about a month later that I thought:
"But he's glad in heaven that the books are in good hands."

After all, the entomologist's tales may not be the most fun.

My entomologist friend told me that about 30 years ago, as a graduate student, he caught insects in the Caucasus. One day I switched to catching butterflies, particularly rutabagas, whose males are known to smell like lemon. His actions were watched for a long time by a young shepherd. Then he couldn't stand it any longer.
"Why do you catch butterflies?"
He caught one of the rutabagas, sniffed it, and answered himself.
"Ah!!! You'll drink tea!

How's that?"

A x...... she knows him. I can't name names, but when I saw these descriptions in the monograph, I almost died. I think, wow! Moreover, there may also be subspecies of the 4th and 5th orders that have not yet been described. But working with them is a matter of the future. Not Far

I go to the galiun at the Argamdzha outpost in Ukok. H - 2400 m. Cold weather. China is 20 km away, Mongolia is 15 km away. Kazakhstan at 40. Tundra.
Well, in short, I go there and see something familiar on the wipes. I took a look. Mother of God. EO. In person. Raised up to the commander of the outpost. there they are all good guys and acquaintances. They only change frequently. No one gave an explanation.

In Soviet times, issues often began with articles like: "actual problems of entomology in the light of solutions ... congress" or something like that. Such "publications" are quite appropriate.

20.11.2009 15:18, Yakovlev

Switching to coated paper would completely neutralize the possibility of using EO in this quality

I read somewhere (definitely not in the Internet) that Shvanvich developed (or participated in the development) a scheme to disguise the spire of the Peter and Paul Fortress Cathedral, St. Isaac's Cathedral and other architectural dominants of Leningrad that served as landmarks during the shelling of the city. Unfortunately, I don't remember the source.

About 12 years ago, my good friends were in the Magadan region on an expedition to catch butterflies.Oeneis,Erebia,Clossiana.Class photos-tents are standing and red fish are lying around-they went to spawn on the river. In the background, behind the tents, mishka is standing by the river, fishing. We invited them to go fishing on a boat in the Sea of Okhotsk.Salmon are caught on red caviar-the eggs are put on spinning. The boat is being prepared to go out to sea-they give my friend a bucket and say-go to the fish factory for bait-caviar-the plant is 100 meters from the pier.Comes to the checkpoint-there's Uncle Vasya sitting watchman-he shows him a bucket-says-caviar on bait for fishing maltsuki give-the men said to ask you.Watchman without problems Varota opens-and points a finger into the distance-there is a barrel of caviar-open and take as much as you need. The man walked for an hour on the territory of the fish factory-the barrel was not found.Returns to the watchman.Where's the barrel? He says to him-what are you, blind or something and once again pokes his finger from far away-points to the barrel-there it is.A barrel with a three-storey building-like oil tankers. The man climbed up the ladder, opened the hatch(as in the movie-White Sun of the desert barrel-comrade Sukhov drove the harem there and fired a machine gun from the top) - full of red caviar.I scooped up a bucket and went fishing.

A little bit about Shvanvich and mimicry.
When I was conscripted in the Air Force, we had two funny ensigns in the unit.
They plowed their hangar with planes to paint in a protective color.
They took one or two buckets of paint and a brush, and the other matyugalnik.
One commands from afar, the other paints.
So they wrote on the hangar gate the well-known cheerful word of three letters.
Polkan drove up in his car and thanked him.
And when I drove away, I was very upset.

Papilio alexanor-beauties-who caught-know.Aragats is also a famous place in Vayk(formerly Azizbekov) in Armenia. They fly to Aragats on a steep slope near the village of Antarut(the highest, last of the villages on the mountain).Vladimir Sergeyevich Murzin told me about this place. He worked at the observatory there for several years.A description of the habits of Aleksanor and how he searched for the damone whitefish, caught it-there is a place with feed cruciferous plants there-read in his book.Damon needs to be able to catch-I only caught a couple of them there-I found a place in the gorge at Pos Garni-I caught them there.Who is going there-I can throw off crocs-beautiful places.Friends-there are locals-are good people.Super butterflies-super description.Alexanora-stay on the highest places-bumps on the crest of the slope-males keep the territory-guard-fight as much as pieces of wings fly.Umbrella plants grow on the slope-they come down to feed.I watched a lot of Alexanor's habits from the sidelines.Several males fly in a limited area-fight-talk among themselves. Each of them has a different size, its own character, different habits, manners.Do butterflies have personality, character, (soul)? On Mount Aragats, aleksanor takes off later than in Garni and Vayk-higher.

Yes, Alexanor prefers steep rocky slopes.Someone said that this is the nature of aleksanor-to catch air currents and plan. But a frightened male without any streams is great at running away.
Belyanka damone, also true, likes to fly in damp gorges. It would seem that a small, delicate butterfly prefers such a cold and wet biatop.
I have seen all this personally, but not in Armenia.

In Georgia, I chased Colias caucasica, they are worn as if they were stung in the ass-it's fun to run after them, but not very much-it's easier to wait and sit until it arrives on the flower itself.I wrapped a coil of barbed wire around my leg in pursuit.Half of the pant leg was torn off nafig-yento higher Atskuri case was.It happened there in 1996.Two Gurams live upstairs-shepherds-father and son. There's a lot of P. apollo, Erebia hewitsoni on the rocks.Below Colias aurorina, Pseudochazara. If someone gathers for Colias caucasica,I'll throw off the crocs and it will feed on the broom tree. There is a pass near Akhaltsikhe-it starts flying later, but the biotope is good.

Another unfunny story
When I first went to Germany, I knew that I would see the legendary Klass Naumann - who gave many Russians the green light in Germany, the husband of the Afghan Princess Fatima (he fell in love with her even before the war, when he worked in Kabul), the director of the Aleksand Koenig Institute in Bonn, a friend of Helmut Kehl, and of course, a great connoisseur of motley flowers.
I bought some presents. Albums about Altai, Altai vodka, Gorno-Altai balsam, and five excellent siegen mattresses.
When Vadim [Zolotukhin] and I arrived in Bonn, Klas was ill and couldn't see us. Vadim said that he had heard that Klas had been growing up lately. We left our gifts with the secretary. Later, Vadim spoke to Naummann from Munich. He thanked them for their participation and gifts. Sorry we didn't see Mr. Yakovlev.
I think well, we worked at his institute for 4 days, so I wanted to meet, and he was talking on the phone - cheerfully even, but I couldn't spare a minute...
That's what I thought.
2 months later, Klas died. from bladder cancer. Excruciatingly
tall and successful in everything, the 60-year-old handsome man could not seem to us exhausted, bald from chemotherapy.. He has done many good deeds to many Russian entomologists. And me. Once again taught us to love every day of our lives.
A year later, Thomas Witt purchased the Naumann Library for 0.75 million euros. I noticed a huge amount of Russian literature in his library. HUGE! And so many kind words on the flyleaf. From Ukrainians, Russians, and dozens of our colleagues. I think that Thomas now has the best selection of Russian entomological literature. With autographs!
I'm sorry I never saw it. Replace the grumbling European scholar Klas Naumann, who often spoke. I've seen all the European capitals. But the best of them is Leningrad.
I don't know what this story is about... Just remembered

Two of my sleep records-14 hours in 2 weeks-twice I slept like this-I never slept in my life. For the first time in 22 years - in Saratov, I made an urgent order to St. Petersburg for souvenirs of tropical butterflies-I straightened them out-I made boxes and pasted butterflies.
The second time, in 1997, I was on an expedition to Armenia-there was a lot of work-I came alone and hired two men with a car to help me catch fish.I went with them during the day in the mountains-showed them, looked for what to catch.Learned.And then I spent the whole night in the light catching and packing, sorting out the material.I found some good Armenian guys to help me then. How I found them-I came to Armenia alone-money-the Germans financed the expedition.I approached the Armenian taxi drivers-the people lived poorly-there was no work-in 1997.I definitely needed a man with a car.I talked and haggled with taxi drivers for an hour. The money is not so big-which I offered for 2 months of work. They thought about it and suggested to whom to go to talk, suggest. The town is a small Vayk. Two guys (men) older than me for 4 years agreed.Good muzhiks

10.12.2009 23:09, гундоров

Winter is not the season.New Year's Eve is coming soon, and then soon the butterflies will fly.In Saratov, on average, on 29.03 years,Inachis io,Nymphalis polychloros, and N. urticae appear first, even in the middle of snow, on sunny days. There was a topic about Turkmen hedgehogs-funny animals.Hedgehogs-I thought I told you how they steal butterflies when they catch them at night. In Turkmenistan, long-legged eared hedgehogs-hilarious-run hedgehogs on long legs quickly, ears shake. They look funny. The main thieves when catching moths are hedgehogs and bats.We are sitting once in my mother's former dacha (Saratov) - we catch-the daylight lamp is on-we are abusing a table 10 meters away.Hedgehog-hedgehog-fat-healthy runs out of the dark and
the healthiest butterflies ham ham ham-impudent.Butterflies fly to the light and fall=sit.Only the wings remained. We kicked her away-the hedgehog-went to the table-she came running again-pokhavala.They came up to deal with her-she was twisted in a ball-they gave her a whiff of chloroform-they put her in a ball, in the spines ,where her nose is soaked
in chloroform(butterflies are put to sleep-it is used for operations as anesthesia).I lay in a tangle for 10-15 minutes, then started to turn around.Tries to walk-skids-falls on its side-legs are slurred-drunk, slept for 20 minutes-snored.At least we collected the butterflies that the bats failed to catch.
Minus 10 last days at night near Saratov.During the day, it was near zero.I saw a live gamut for a scoop this afternoon. New season coming soon guys!

Happy New Year to all entomologists!Do not lose heart, do not give in to a bad mood! The frosts will end. Many people know how to guess by hand, interpret dreams, feel the aura of humans and animals, and feel the terrain.
Perhaps my most exclusive dream is in a"hammock" -a mountaineering one.We stopped for the night on the skalnaya wall-we didn't have enough strength to walk to the night, to a flat place-we spent the night on the wall in the Pamirs.Hooks were stuffed-nets were stretched like hammocks.Primus raskochegarili-brewed tea, soup and sleep. You cover yourself with a net-you fasten it with hooks in the rock-so as not to fly away in your sleep.Kholodryga-in a sleeping bag zatkutyvaeshsya-the face is completely tightened-only the nose sticks out and sleep.Wake up-my mother-down-far to fall-birds fly-get up and step nowhere-on the wall. You need to go to the toilet-it flies far to the bottom.
You wake up at dawn with icicles on your sawyere in the netting on the wall.First of all, gulls on the primus. You come to your senses and then you need to climb further.Hooks are thrown-you can't pull them out of the rock already-but it's a pity-titanium ones(I only bought titanium-they don't break and are light)- they cost money. You collect ropes and a hammock, and you stand on the ledge like a windowsill.
And forward-further.Fingers-hands and feet stretch-important-on the rock on the fingers is all climbing-load.You get up to a flat place-where I was going-rapture-I could. The air and view are amazing.

Version # 2 (see page 2 in this thread). The story is authentic, recorded from the words of a direct observer. Probably many people have already heard different versions.

In the 70s of the last century, one summer, at a field practice in invertebrate zoology, the following story happened. A group of part-time students under the guidance of an elderly teacher went to the suburbs of Penza. Imagine a hot afternoon, the edge of a forest and a wide meadow. Under a spreading oak tree, a teacher sits on a tree stump and reads a book-while having time to look around at a group of aunts and uncles (usually all from the countryside) who for the first time in their lives saw nets and mordants and FELL into childhood with a giant and hooting rush through this meadow. Very colorful was one uncle vesma of a well-fed appearance who tried to catch up with butterflies with a net, constantly tripping, falling, hooting... All this was closely watched by local milkmaids passing by the forest. They set down their trays and stared at the sight they had never seen before... They sighed, groaned, gesticulated...
One of them couldn't stand it any longer and said peremptorily:
"He's so fine, but what's it like for a mother?"
The companions nodded their heads in agreement and picked up their milk trays and continued on their way to the milking parlor.
(from a series of branded Tales of Penza and Saratov Entomologists).
Yes, and what was the version about the old lady???

In Yalta, he sold souvenirs made from tropical butterflies on the embankment in the early nineties.I went once in 1992 to the Crimea (Simferopol) - a funny story-a reserved car.I'm with an awesome backpack (40 kg) of empty boxes for souvenirs for butterflies.I went into the car and met a classmate-he and his wife were on vacation.I have a ticket-a place on the side of the top shelf with a side-3 from the conductor. He has the end of the car - at the toilet, not the sides. In the middle of the road, already in Ukraine, the seats next to him were freed up-people came out.I went to sit with him and stayed there to sleep. In the morning I woke up-stretched-looked in the aisle at my side seat-my backpack is not on the third shelf. To the guide-where is my backpack-she says-the uncle who was riding next to you got drunk.I went to get some vodka at a small station and didn't come back. Then at some station at night, the cops came in and said that he was behind the train, asked him to pick up his things.Things damn-he had some kind of skating rink, but the cops took out my backpack at the same time-the conductor said-the cops swore for a long time while the backpack(40 kg) was removed from the upper third shelf and taken out of the car at night. I then had to return from Simferopol for a Backpack

Another topic. Not all experienced climbers and many have serious high-altitude expeditions just ahead of them. And there are many important details when traveling to a particular climate zone. For example, there is no firewood in the Pamirs-there is nothing to do without primus.I first went in 1990,before that I was in the Altai, the Caucasus, and the Crimea.I didn't know what exactly to take from the equipment. We were told and explained.I invite people who have visited different climatic zones to share their knowledge and tell us what equipment and equipment are simply necessary for expeditions.
For example, sunglasses are a small but very important detail.
You get burned in the mountains at a height. If you don't have a mask, you'll always get around. And it's cool-even if there is no sun-fog-you sit in a cloud-you still sunbathe, only even worse-the sun's rays (ultraviolet) it is dispersed and fractured from microdrops of water in the fog.And the tan is coming from all sides-I climbed-cool-even in the nose, the skin is peeling off from the sun-tan burn. The most unpleasant thing is the burn of the eyes of climbers - as welders-are called-bunnies picked up.It is necessary to walk on snowfields, glaciers, and at high altitudes with glasses.I burned my eyes twice-the pain is very specific and intense-it seems that all the eyelids are clogged with sand and stones.Once on Elbrus. The highest peak in Europe is the Caucasus 5642.It is easier to walk and breathe in the Pamirs at this altitude.Pamir is higher-on the eastern bottom-the valley is 4000 meters. But there is a big difference-a lot depends on the humidity of the air.Elbrus 5642 is much harder to breathe and walk than in the Pamirs with a dry climate at the same altitude. And in the Pamirs in 1992, I went alone on the Fedchenko Glacier(the largest in the USSR, I went from the south of the Murghab river-a brutal route-ravines and moraines are continuous)- I burned my eyes well-I was bent over for three days.
