A rating of 10 species of living organisms discovered in 2008 has been published
The International Institute for Species Research at the University of Arizona, together with the International Committee of Taxonomists, published a rating of the ten most interesting species first described in 2008, the press service of the university reports.
The rating includes a pea - sized seahorse, a decaffeinated coffee tree, bacteria that inhabit hair styling foam, a very small snake with a length of only 104 mm, and a very large insect with a length of more than half a meter, fossils of the oldest known viviparous vertebrate, as well as a very agile snail, the body of which it can rotate around four axes.
The first place in the list is occupied by a tropical palm tree, the flowering of which ends with the death of the plant. The list also includes a ghost slug from Wales and a deep-sea blue swallow fish. RIA Novosti

About the long (most) stickman:

With a body length of around 14 inches (36.6 centimeters) and an overall length of some 22.3 inches (56.7 centimeters), Phobaeticus chani is the longest insect in the world. It lives in the canopy of forests in Borneo, Malaysia, which makes it extremely difficult to find. Therefore, researchers know very little about it, as only a few specimens were ever recovered.

I was struck by a new species of slug - not somewhere in the tropics, but in Wales, and in a densely populated area!!! "Selenochlamys ysbryda was a surprising find in the densely populated area of Cardiff, Wales."

Interesting stuff. In Welsh, the word "ysbryd" means cast (because no one has found it before). And in the UK, it was also brought from somewhere in the south.
Here you can read about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_slug
