The most famous entomologist

I watched a presentation for a lecture on entomology - Fabre was declared the most famous entomologist in it. In general, we can agree with this, but still the most cited entomologist in the scientific literature is Hennig . Maybe I'm wrong?

is it the most famous or the most quoted one?
they don't know Hennig in kindergartens. but
half of my non-entomologist friends know Fabra. but they had never heard of Hennig.
fabre is really the most famous

yes, probably, no one has the level of fame of Fabre... If you ask who among entomologists even just educated people (or even biologists) know, who will they name besides Fabre?

Good question!

However, I found that on naego there are also unexpected (for me!) the answers:

Here on zhtot question Who is a famous entomologist? one answer was given:

Ph. A. Zaitzev was a world famous entomologist.
(and it is better to write his name F. A. Zaitzev)

And Hennig is most likely not being quoted in entomological works.

27.02.2011 12:46, amara

Despite the fact that most people think of Fabre,

We must not forget that Charles Darwin (do they still remember him? smile.gif ) was fond of

insects.

Hennig is known not as an entomologist in the first place, but as the creator of cladistics.
Spent a small social network. poll now, Nabokov leads the way)

Nice turn! I like it: Nabokov's portrait will impress students!

But, after all, Nabokov is also known as a writer.

That's right, but Hennig is not known to the townsfolk at smile.gifall

Who is the most famous entomologist? Well, it depends on the audience in which the survey is conducted. Among ordinary people, the result will be the same (and, most likely, it is still Fabr), among professionals and "burned-out" amateurs, the answers will be more diverse (although here Fabr, at least, will be among the leaders). Nabokov's popularity as an entomologist is somewhat surprising - for most people who are far from the topic, he is still primarily the author of Lolita. But for some reason, no one named Nikolai Nikolaevich Plavilshchikov. In my opinion, he was undeservedly not immediately included in the list of applicants. As a child, we all read his books, and in addition to popularizing biological knowledge in general (remember his "Homunculus"), he (unlike Nabokov-with all due respect) is an Entomologist without any reservations.

What about Cousin Benedict??? A Hemulen... What's a Hemulen? His entire collection was devoured in the harsh winter. Something, looking at the local inhabitants, I strongly doubt that any of them would have allowed this lol.gif

27.02.2011 17:45, Yakovlev

1. Nabokov
2. Walter Rothschild

A great writer and the greatest tycoon. Who is great as an entomologist of entomologists, the devil knows. Probably Fabre. Benedict and Durimar do not pass through here - they were not there.

27.02.2011 17:58, Shofffer

No, I'm for Carl Linnaeus.
He described enough insects to be considered an entomologist.

He didn't know much about taxonomy, and all the mace-moustaches are in the genus Papilio lol.gif
In general, it is necessary, of course, to distinguish - the most famous for ordinary people and for entomologists.

About Nabokov as a writer (famous, famous wink.gif) and Rothschild as a banker, no doubt, has been heard by most and something is known by many. But ask 10 people who are far from biology (and entomology in particular) if they know about the achievements of these worthy men in entomology (or that they did it at all). I am sure that it is unlikely that there will be more than one or two people who have heard about it among the ten interviewed at random (at best, only a few will remember that one of these Jewish barons collected fleas wink.gif). And the question was initially raised, as far as I understood, not about which entomologists became famous "on the other side of the moon" (including a famous writer or tycoon), but who is famous precisely and primarily because of their entomological field. And here, as it seems to me, Fabre is out of competition.

Benedict and Durimar don't come here - they weren't there.

Well, what does Durimar (even as a fictional character) have to do with it? He's more of a hirudologist! lol.gif

27.02.2011 18:27, Victor Titov

No, I'm for Carl Linnaeus.
He described enough insects to be considered an entomologist.

And what? At least, in my opinion, it is more logical than Nabokov or Rothschild.

I agree. In any case, Fabre's books made a huge impression on me. I remember very well how, as a schoolboy, I was bought as a gift a two-volume book "The Instinct and Morals of Insects" for as much as 40 rubles. (!) I still enjoy opening yellowed pages!

Probably this conclusion is due to this
http://www.tonnel.ru/?l=gzl&uid=1141
there you need to search the page to find the word "pervert", a lot of text wink.gif

And I liked the stories of V. S. Grebennikov! And Fabra of course, but Grebennikov is very well written about bumblebees, and he also has a cool technique there with a flying platform wink.gif100% he came up with for the sake of warming up interest in insects)))

27.02.2011 22:46, Pavel Morozov

if you make a rating, then I would draw the top three leaders like this:
1-Fabre
2-Plavilshchikov
3-Nabokov

They forgot about Marikovsky.
For as long as I can remember, I found all his new books. They were read with pleasure.

About Marikovsky - that's right. But we haven't forgotten him alone! If you start to remember, duc... And Pyotr Petrovich Semyonov-Tian-Shansky?! President of the Russian Entomological Society for a second! umnik.gif

And this, Dim, is the source text - for foreigners:

I agree about Nabokov. I'm talking about his perversion-pedophilia. just read "lolita"

28.02.2011 4:53, Yakovlev

If you take Nabokov as a professional entomologist, and he was such and this is a fact, and take Nabokov's fame as a person (writer, etc.), then he will be in the first place. Film adaptations, books. The question was who is the most famous entomologist. This is Nabokov! But not in the field of entomology! Plavilshchikov and Marikovsky are right, but not for everyone - only for the participants of our forum.
If you look at Walter Rothschild from the same perspective, he is also extremely famous.
Sorry, I forgot Semyonov-Tien-Shansky. The most powerful figure.
If we take pure entomology, then Fabr.

That's exactly what is NOT in the field of entomology! Over the past 5 or 6 years, I have interviewed about fifty people of different professions and interests, united by one thing - they all read Lolita, and some also read Ada. So, among them was only one (!), a journalist by profession, who knew that " Nabokov collected butterflies." So Nabokov is an entomologist for NON-entomologists-a writer, and people's eyes go out when it turns out that he is an entomologist.

However, among entomologists, he is the most famous

It's like trying to figure out who Leonardo da Vinci was. As an artist-he did not fully fulfill any major orders, although he worked in the workshop of the famous master Verocchio, as a sculptor-he wanted to create a giant statue of a horse, but created only a clay model, which was later destroyed. As an anatomist, I made a lot of sketches and text explanations, but I didn't publish a single page. As a military consultant, he came up with a bunch of ideas that were centuries ahead of their time, but practically nothing came up during his lifetime (at least, there is no documentary evidence). So is Nabokov - everyone knows about him, but what exactly he did is a question for many.

28.02.2011 11:10, yurich

Fabr.
As for Nabokov, why didn't anyone mention S. T. Aksakov,A. V. Tsvetaev,
and Prince N. M. Romanov?

28.02.2011 11:28, Yakovlev

no one but Russians knows about Aksakov and Tsvetaev.

28.02.2011 12:06, yurich

Really.
But Nabokov is also known as a writer.
