Today I learned that on July 8, after a long and prolonged illness, Leonid Vladimirovich Kaabak, one of the greatest researchers of the Pamir lepidoptera, a great expert on sailing ships and a major chemist, passed away.
I knew Leonid Vladimirovich personally, he helped me a lot in my time when it was difficult with literature - it was from his copy of Sakai's book "The butterflies of Afghanistan" that I began to get acquainted with the rich world of Badakhshan butterflies. Leonid Vladimirovich was always friendly and hospitable - because of necessity, I had to spend several nights with him, and these were always warm evenings spent talking about butterflies and mountains.
We corresponded for a long time, and his letters were always very informative and friendly.
I have great respect for this man; I have named a subspecies of the blue pigeon Polyommatus eros kaabaki in his honor.
Rest in peace!
