Beetle as a gift

Community and ForumInsects breedingBeetle as a gift

Ищу жука, 02.06.2007 23:11

Hello, dear forumchane! smile.gif

I want to give my husband a beetle for his birthday (it turned out that he loves them and would like to have one at home eek.gif). But I don't know anything about beetles, except that I can tell a ladybug from a praying mantis and can instantly remove cockroaches wink.gif.

Please give us your opinion!

Which beetle is better to give? It is desirable that it:
- does not require a lot of attention and care (my daughter and I are there for thismol.gif umnik.gif);
- is unpretentious and not terrible (so that you can give it to your neighbors for a while, we travel and travel a lot);
- I could live in a "small aquarium for beetles", sorry, I don't know what to call it, which can sometimes be removed to the closet (to save it from my daughter there).

Will a stag beetle do? (It was he who liked my husband at the zoo). Or another solid horned dog? And the male rhino? And the praying mantis? (I should also like it: on vacation in Transcarpathia, our father watched the disappearance of one of the praying mantises, and then the pregnancy of the remaining one, with no less pleasure than my own smile.gif)

Where can I read about the beetles you offer and how to care for them?

Where can I buy it? In the near future, because my husband's birthday is already on June 11 beer.gif

Thank you in advance for your attention and answers!! I'm really looking forward to them jump.gif

Absolute OFF:
and we also need to vacate the rented apartment in a month - you don't happen to rent it out, do you? Or do you happen to have a reliable team of apartment repairers that you know?(I didn't find a smiley face with a cute smile, so I'll have to do this : smile.gif)

em... Maybe it's better to keep it in a frame?

Get some tropical bronze-both beautiful and easy to get (on the same Bird, for example).

03.06.2007 10:22, Guest

RippeR smile.gif, it will not work: he will only be upset that the beetle was nailed

Bolivarsmile.gif, thank you! I'll go look for a photo on the forum. But the bird market seems to be closed due to avian flu. Or is this outdated news?!

03.06.2007 11:00, Ищу жука

Bolivar, are the stag beetle, rhino or praying mantis very sensitive to care? Don't you recommend them?

If I found the photo of the bronze girl correctly, then she is really very cute. Did you mention this one?" http://www.zin.ru/Animalia/Coleoptera/rus/dicmicme.htm

And how much can they cost and where can you buy them, except for the bird? Can I order online?

03.06.2007 12:13, RippeR

Most likely, you will find this particular species on the market (see the photo below) Most often they are bred.
Here is the description and breeding:
http://www.terrarium1.narod.ru/papka7/text8.htm

If you will take - I advise you to immediately take oklo 4.. Then they will breed and over time you will have more of them smile.gif

The view that you presented is unlikely to sell.. And if there is something similar (large and horned), then most likely it will be expensive..

Deer and rhinos are both very expensive and very whimsical in care (you need to start with bronzes). In addition, larvae in most deer and rhinos develop for several years.. It is better to take cute colorful bronzes..
Mantises are also whimsical. Yes, they generally have nothing to do with beetlessmile.gif, they are also predators - you will still have to breed live food or constantly buy it - it's very steamy.
I threw bananas to the bronzes or poured honey and at least for a few days you can not worry (when and how)

RippeR, thank you!! Very cute beetles smile.gif

What do you think of these bronzers and rhinos?
I found it here: http://minizoo.donetsk.ua/Beetles.html
there are also pictures there. They say both are easy to breed and unpretentious... They live longer.

Dicronorrhina derbiana layardi, Peringey 1882(1892)

Large, bright and easy to breed bronzes, this subspecies originates from Namibia, the size of the imago is usually from 3 to 5.5 cm, males are larger than females and have a small horn. The beetle is extremely beautiful, some specimens also have a very strong red tint, primarily males. The larvae of all dicronorrhinae are very easy to contain, cannibalism is not typical for them, up to 30 larvae can be planted on 10 liters of substrate, the substrate is the most common-crushed foliage, it is possible with an admixture of wood dust. Feeding the larvae with vegetables and fruits is useful. Egg development usually lasts about 2 weeks, larvae about six months, 2-3 months passes at the pupal stage, adults usually live up to 3-4 months. Pupae are sensitive to excessive or insufficient humidity, often when it is chosen incorrectly, beetles with crumpled elytra come out of cocoons or they die while still in cocoons.

Xylotrupes gideon, Linnaeus, 1767 ssp. beckeri

This subspecies of xylotrups originates from the Malay Peninsula, has, as a rule, completely black color. Adult size is usually about 4.5-7 cm, males are noticeably larger than females and often have well-developed horns. Perhaps Xylotrupes gydeon is the most popular and easily bred of all rhinos. The larvae are very undemanding, easily and quickly grow in crushed rotten wood, which can be mixed with a certain percentage of foliage. The larvae of the first two stages can damage and eat each other, especially when planted tightly, at the last stage they can be kept together without any problems and they can also be fed vegetables. Eggs develop 10-14 days, larvae about 8-12 months, cocoons 1-2 months, adults usually live up to six months, eating bananas and other sweet fruits, honey. Beetles can be kept in pairs or groups without special lighting - one male and several females, two or more males can show aggression to each other. For reproduction, a substrate layer of about 10 cm is sufficient, pairs regularly mate and then females constantly burrow to the very bottom to lay rather large whitish eggs.

And another question: is it stupid to buy one beetle? Do they have to be bred immediately? Or will he be lonely by himself?
How much is expensive? In the Internet, I have not found anywhere that they are sold smile.gif

03.06.2007 14:36, guest: Ищу жука ))

Does the bird market sell beetles on any given day or only on weekends?
Where do you get your beetles? smile.gif.
Where and how best to buy it, please advise!

03.06.2007 15:01, RippeR

Thinking these beetles will be expensive.. Expensive.. maybe 50 bucks a piece.. Congolese can cost half a pupaar.. you can decide for yourself..
Of course, it is better to take at least 2 .. It will be better for them.. 1 bug it's just not serious smile.gif

03.06.2007 19:37, Ищу жука

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO BUY BEETLES?
Only at the poultry market? I called there today, and they said there were no beetles. Maybe someone who answered just didn't know?

03.06.2007 23:55, RippeR

maybe..

03.06.2007 23:58, Tigran Oganesov

In general, the Ripper explained everything to you in a popular way, respect to him. Bronzovka is really a good option, they are the least of all problems. Antlers and rhinos are much more difficult, they take a long time to develop, and it is difficult to find them. And mantises are not beetlessmile.gif, they are rather predatory cockroaches. If beetles are not principled, then I can recommend stick insects or tropical cockroaches (even better).
There are such Madagascar hissing cockroaches (classics of the genre):

This is the first ten minutes. To us now some friends (previously very squeamish in terms of insects) go to visit, first of all our cockroaches poshipit. smile.gif

04.06.2007 16:16, Ищу жука

Thank you so much for your attention and clarification! Very clear smile.gif.

Now the main question is-WHERE TO BUY THEM?! There are still cockroaches in pet stores (Papa Carlo, for example), but bronzies and stick insects are not.

The fact is that I'm dragging the child to the store, so I would like to go for sure, but you can't easily call and ask for a bird.
Are they sold anywhere on the Internet??

Why call? Come and see. Stick insects are always there, all sorts of different things.

Even on a weekday?!

I was the guest here

RippeR, and by the way, my husband, for whom all the fuss is made, is originally from Chisinau wink.gif(he lived in Botany on Zelinsky Street). How small the world smile.gifis

You can do it on a weekday, but it's better on weekends - there are more creatures there. And come around 10-11 o'clock, more likely to find.

How small the world is smile.gif

This is not a small world, this is the layer in which we communicate, narrow wink.gif

Bolivar, thank you. Is there a separate, specialized insect store in Moscow where you can buy everything for them, about them and themselves? Maybe based on an existing museum or laboratory or department, etc.? If not, it's strange that no one has opened it yet... After all, there are many of you!

Insect expert, don't tell me: an entomologist and a political scientist are not exactly twin brothers wink.gif. Although one of my friends, a Russian-American from Israelsmile.gif, told me about the theory that among your friends there is a person who knows a completely foreign aunt who sat across from you in a trolleybus... smile.gif.

In general, I'm sorry for the OFF, I've been on your forum for three days without a break, and I've already stopped being sick of insects, I even felt some respect for them, looking at how you yourself tenderly treat them smile.gif.
Yesterday I couldn't stand it and told my husband about the beetles, he broke into the best feelings, in short, he was VERY happy about the future gift! I was right: he likes the beetle best, but if I don't get it, then cockroaches (horror smile.gif) and stick insects will do. I shouldn't have worried. I'll go hunting tomorrow or the day after, and then I'll tell you what I've found. And Goya, who gave palochnikov in another temke something is silent, but it would be very useful - he lives right next to us.

05.06.2007 14:15, Ищу жука

Yes, and yesterday my husband and I just fell in tears, reading the theme "May beetles"... Masterpiece :D

Thank you, it's very nice to hear (readwink.gif) this! I am glad that the forum has begun to perform a certain "educational" function, which is very important.

And where on the bird market (Moscow) are beetles (bronzovki) sold? I was there today, a big babylon with fish, dogs, food, parrots, snakes, bird-eaters, cockroaches. Beetles only dried in the framework of seen. Maybe I didn't just see the right row or store. Where are they located there?

It depends on what live bronzes you need. Some I can suggest are

chelorrhina polyphemus or savagei

There is one person on the tarantulas forum who sometimes sells surplus larvae.
See the section "Other invertebrates".
