The website functioning updates

Community and ForumWebsite news and updatesThe website functioning updates

Peter Khramov, 31.07.2023 20:29

We are simultaneously working on improving the website in several areas: full redesign (including mobile-friendly version), Google Maps update, Acceleration of the webpages (some of them are too slow now) and we upload new text and graphic data. We translate a lot these days too.
If you have some thoughts/wishes, what is missing on the website right now (in any aspect — from technical to visual and content) — let us know in the comments or in the email, now is the best time to make changes on the Insecta.pro website.

There were probliems with correct language version at 404 error pages and in the footer of the website pages. They are solved now.

I will publish info regarding minor improvements of the website in this topic, And there will be separate topics in the "News" about larger upgrades.

On any page of the site at the top right there are buttons with the names of popular orders of insects. By clicking on the button with the squad, you will get the same website Insecta.pro, but where the displaying of information concerning species of all orders, with the exception of the selected one, will be minimized. I.e. by clicking on Diptera, we see information on Diptera all over the site, and beetles with butterflies and others will not get in the way. Now the explanatory label title has been added (it appears when you hover cursor over any of these buttons), plus a glitch has been fixed when taxa belonging to other insect orders (and not just to the selected one) could be displayed on the main page of the website in the "Frequently used taxa" section.

The newly found glitches with the displaying of texts in the language adequate to the current version of the site, in particular, on the pages of the authors, have been fixed.

Over past few days, the sections structure for describing species has been corrected, the system for uploading English species names to the site has been corrected too. A glitch with subspecies search was fixed (previously, in some cases, the link to the subspecies in the search results could be erroneous), the subsection "Popular taxa" was turned over so that it is more correctly displayed on mobile devices, the problem was fixed, due to which an error took place when uploading photos with archives — now archives uploading is working correctly again. Plus minor glitches with Cyrillic substitution in the English version of the site have been treated.

In some cases, the website could not accept files larger than 2MB for uploading, although in fact the limit is 5MB for single photos and 50MB for photos in ZIP archives. Now the situation has been corrected, the restrictions apply exactly for the amount of 5 and 50 MB, not 2 MB.

Identification level (gallery section) has new value "Identification to subgenus and higher".

29.11.2023 23:17, Peter Khramov

Earlier, in some cases, there could be problems with automatic substitutions of the source names when adding new information about the species. Now this problem is solved.

In the gallery section, you can now select photos with a mark on the map or, conversely, photos without a mark. It is convenient to understand which of the photos you have not linked yet, and it is convenient if you only need those photos of other users who have a link to the map.

07.12.2023 19:23, Peter Khramov

Until now, there was a glitch when in the gallery it was possible to select only those photos that are linked to geo-points (map marks), but it was not possible to make a reverse selection (in order to see only photos that are NOT linked to geo-points). Now the error has been fixed, both options work.
I remind all users: if you encounter any problem with the Insecta.pro website, do not hesitate to write about it on the forum or email me or call me on the phone (see the section contacts, and I will help you with its solution.

We reduced restrictions on uploading a single image file to the website gallery. Now the limit is 20 MB. In addition, the error message when uploading an too large file has become more detailed.

10.01.2024 22:58, Peter Khramov

The problem was fixed where in some cases the link in the right block “Fresh from the community” led to the main page of the website, and not to the comment page.

12.01.2024 22:04, Peter Khramov

A transform engine has been working on the website for a long time — allowing you to highlight species and other taxa in comments/messages. But if the user did not follow the news on the site, it was not always clear to him. Now, it is written everywhere above the comment addition form that taxa in messages can be highlighted with double @ character so that they are automatically converted into a link to the taxon's page (or simply in italics if the taxon does not have a page on the website yet). Moreover, if you write a synonym, then an adequate link to the corresponding taxon is also generated.

19.01.2024 20:46, Peter Khramov

In the "angle/type" parameter, the value "genitalia preparation" is now available for photos. So, you can now upload (and select in the gallery) such kind of insects photos.

23.01.2024 20:13, Peter Khramov

The format of captions to comments on taxa pages and photos pages for registered and unregistered users has been changed, minor bugs have been fixed.

31.01.2024 18:21, Peter Khramov

Previously, in the gallery section, with the selected insect species, it was possible to set a different taxon, but photos of the species were still displayed. Now this has been fixed, and you cannot enter another taxon with a given species (you have first to remove the checkbox mark from the species). If you notice any errors or inconveniences in working with the website — write to me by email or in the Community section, and we will fix it.

05.02.2024 17:24, Peter Khramov

Previously, the link from the supraspecific taxon page led to a photos page where the identification was performed only up to the taxon (for example, the family). Now this link leads to a page where there will be photos not only with the identification up to this taxon, but also up to all daughter taxa (up to the level of the subgenus). For example, not only photos where the identification is up to the family Lycaenidae, but also where the identification is up to any of the daughter taxa of Lycaenidae (up to the level of subgenera).

08.02.2024 13:23, Peter Khramov

We updated the design of comments for photos, species, superspecies taxa, as well as topics in the Community/forum. Now the comments are more indented, they separated by a light line and alternate by background color. It will be easier to read them like this.
