The dung beetle species Deltochilum valgum has shown scientists that herbivorous insects can become predators if the environment forces them to.

Fabre also mentioned South American plates making scavenger balls for posterity. I have bronzes in the home insectarium during the laying of eggs willingly eat pieces of raw meat, ham or sausage. During trips to the Ili River, I often observed dung beetles Gymnopleurus aciculatus, which swarmed inside dead fish lying on the bank, or ate discarded fish giblets. At the same time, they did not refuse the larvae and puparia of flies that were inside the carrion. I was very sorry then that I didn't have a camera.

well, this is quite another matter - they need to see squirrels.. Ontophages are also often found on carrion and even aphodia in the genus. In my aquarium, the larvae of bronzes ate their own pupa..
But this is another matter, but specialized nutrition, so that only meat is eaten, and even in hunting for food, is already a little different.

Protein is certainly needed, and cannibalism in the same bronzes at the larval stage often happens, from its lack.
Once Georgy Vladimirovich Nikolaev told me about African plates (unfortunately, I don't remember the type), which feed on locust eggs, purposefully gnawing through the egg pods.

By the way, "myasko" is eaten not only by larvae of bronzes... I once took a copper bronzer on the inflorescence of bodyak ogorodny, which gnawed all the inflorescence, and had a nice dinner phlegmatically chewing the larva of Larin( a large weevil) ... Anthrenus-witness!!!

The crisis also affected insects. They now eat everything that comes to hand(paw).

Oh, and I thought-where to offer a photo? "the sacred beetles eat the snake.
In fact, there are more than a dozen beetles, and the snake's skin is half-empty.

Yes, I know. And yet, they say: to see once is more than to hear a hundred times.

It is for the forest dung beetle that dead reptiles and amphibians are one of the usual food items. In the season of activity of adults of this species (and it is very long), it is difficult to walk along the forest road without seeing a similar picture (although I usually came across on the corpses of frogs).

This type goes in glasses with bait in the form of dead fish. I think that's enough proof
of bloodthirstiness.

Bloodthirsty and locusts, the rear part of the pack consists of predatory individuals, and the front part of the pack is refugees.
