Hornet wasp in Surgut (!?)

Community and ForumInsects biology and faunisticsHornet wasp in Surgut (!?)

Hello everyone! I have a question here - do hornets live in Surgut (Tyumen region, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug)? Well, I couldn't.. that one... Together with my grandmother, we saw it in reality...
I used to be naive, I always thought that in such a wilderness as Surgut, there were no hornets and there were none.
But no.. At first I thought, maybe a sawfly what (eyesight figovenkoe... bad..). Photographed-just like a hornet! It was so humming, u-uu-uhh!))
In general, I am waiting for an answer to the question-are there definitely hornets in Surgut?

I always thought that the hornet is a northern wasp, in theory, he is there you have the most place!?

And I, on the contrary, thought that the south))
For all 12 years of living in Surgut, I saw a hornet for the first time (and for the first time in my life, too).
Well, I can't believe that I saw a hornet in Surgut... But after all, it's true!

Hmm, and we're almost out of hornets. But there are a lot of them to the north, but actually in the north they are not, it turns out that this wasp is not northern or southern, but ancient smile.gif

This is what flew into a residential car early this morning with an interval of 5 minutes. I won't say the type, but two are clearly hornets.
Prirazlomnoye m / r, near Nefteyugansk, approximately 843km of the Khanty-Mansiysk - Nefteyugansk highway.
In principle, it is not far from Surgut

Interesting-interesting...
And they're worth it... or did you help them?

It seems to have helped. Then they would have straightened it out properly.

They are after freezing (nebylo than freeze). I decided to leave them, because I saw them for the first time in this region for many years

And the expansion will be a little later

But I'm afraid to catch Chet... the net is small (triangular in shape, diameter approx. 35 cm), cell 7 mm, can probably chew through, get out, and me... kapets =) Well, I'll find how to starve...

Thank you... To begin with, I would like to meet him again..Maybe I won't see you again."
But I'm still afraid to catch, I can catch butterflies every other time (with my eyesight...)

Can you tell me what you can bait a hornet with? In an hour I'm going to the same place where I met him, but I doubt that he will be there.
So, what are the baits for a hornet?

The question is relevant!!! Urgently need some advice!

If you need to bait and catch a hornet, then I will immediately say that hornets are not attracted to the smell of sweets and so on. (such as German wasps). I would advise, in my experience, to look for hornets in places where sap flows out of: birch, oak, elm, sometimes willow. Here is a photo of a female on a birch tree from my website - http://vespidae2012.narod.ru/vespa_crabro.html. If, for example, you have a birch tree there, from which the sap flows abundantly, then 5-8 hornets can gather there. You can still catch a hornet when, now, the queens are looking for nesting sites, although many have already found them. When the female is looking for a place, she flies slowly and is easily caught with a net.

Thanks for the answer! True, I do not know where to look for birch trees, they are not near the dacha... There are always a lot of webs flying around the cotoneaster, but I didn't see any more hornets there...

pofluzhu chuut-slightly...
We have all sorts of anomalies... I thought, " who is flying at great speed, and even opaque, unlike a dragonfly?" The "it" flew near the lilac tree, but then abruptly and very quickly flew in front of me, and then dived straight into the net. smile.gif I couldn't believe my eyes... the" it " was there.. bedstraw hawk moth!! Unfortunately, it was very shabby, but I was amazed at the size of it (after all, the span of 7 cm and the body length of 3 cm together with the thickness of 1 cm, just... super-giant!). I don't care about Surgut at all... Then hornets (but it turns out this is not surprising), then hawks... in the evening, by the way, yesterday I caught another one, a medium-sized wine, already at the gas station. I found it in the gazebo, maybe it flew to the light... Such are the cases, Surgut surprises me more than ever.
