Ants in spring

Good afternoon! On the weekend I met an anthill with a large number of red forest ants. Moreover, their concentration was unrealistically high (the feeling that all the ants had come out of the anthill) and they seemed to envelop almost the entire anthill with their mass. I would like to know what kind of movement they had?

Heat carriers. It's a little late for that, though. What do you have there now, a small ice age on a local scale?
