Hello dear forumchane, there was such a question. In 2014, I found myself in July, at night, in the suburbs of Moscow. Vsevolozhsk, Saint Petersburg. I was extremely surprised, I don't remember the type of tree, but it was from it that the cicadas were singing. Is it possible that they live there? what types are likely? This summer I will try to catch them, please advise me what is the best way? at night in the light or otherwise???

so far to the north, only cicadetta montana can go (in England and Finland-wiki)
but you can also catch a grasshopper - they chirp no worse and more often at night))

The whole point is that the chirping was exactly from a tall tree, and I could have identified a grasshopper smile.gifNow I can't wait to determine who it was. For information on the type of sps.

26.03.2015 14:57, VBoris

CueTek, do you happen to confuse grasshoppers(Tettigonioidea) and locusts (Acridoidae)? Some of the first ones fly quite well and may well be in the crown of trees.

On trees prefers to sit for example Tettigonia viridissima (I in the childhood already being fond of naekomymi thought - not cicadas whether?) But cicadas still prefer,to put it mildly, to chirp when it's warm and sunny. I didn't hear any cicadas in the tropics at night. And how to warm up from the morning - cicado alarm clock.

Yes, from the previous one. pzhlst.
I didn't think it necessary to write about Cixius and Aphrophora(they were already mentioned to you), because for the sake of decency, these trivial species will also be questioned as C. nervosus and A. alni. But most likely-they are.

Which ones are they? I'm just zero in isoptera... But the gender can be determined 100%?

Maybe also costalis.

Aphrophora costalis Matsumura, 1903 is a junior synonym of A. pectoralis Matsumura, 1903, as it is mentioned in Matsumura's paper on page later

Cicadetta montana Scopoli was recorded not only in the Leningrad region , but also in South Karelia - in the ROC. Sortavala and W. D. Gizhino (Ossianilsson, 1981). This species is even listed in the Red Book of Nature of St. Petersburg (2004), it was found on the Duderhof heights - the last find there dates back to 1986.
But the cicadas only sing in the daytime, in good sunny weather.
And the night singer must have been a Tettigonia grasshopper - they tend to chirp from higher up. At least several times I witnessed that their songs came from the crowns of bushes and quite high.

Thanks!
I have an ex. from the Moscow region, the current specialist was identified as kostalis, I won't say by whom) I just didn't understand why both titles weren't included in the "green" volume - the European part. maybe there are still synonyms, under which it is still there? confused.gif
