In the north-west of our region there are very beautiful dragonflies. Only in the valley of one taiga river. I haven't seen them anywhere else, not even in the neighboring lakes and rivers. Very similar to the Japanese beauty - but only the edges are dark blue with a bright blue ornament. I'm not an expert, but what if it's an unknown species? A big request to respond to collectors (I don't remember what they are called) or connoisseurs.

Alexander, it would be worth naming the area at least wink.gifeven better if there is a photo.

And you should probably move this topic to the "Classification"

Novosibirsk region. But I do not know if it is a male or not. Can someone tell me a website where you can classify this dragonfly?

10.06.2007 11:23, vespabellicosus

It is very desirable to see the photo - without it, guessing makes no sense...

The photo will only be available in August. Can you tell me a site with photos where you can classify them?

Not one of these by any chance?

The description is more similar to Calopteryx splendens.

15.06.2007 5:54, Andylog

Alexander, can you find out what district of the region it is, and what kind of river it is? At least look at the map...

15.06.2007 9:58, Guest

Yes, it is quite similar to the male Beauty-girl (Calopteryx virgo), but only the color is dark blue, with a bright blue border or pattern, I don't remember exactly. And they are located on the Maizas River, Kyshtovsky district, Novosibirsk region.

15.06.2007 10:06, Александр I

Most likely a new look!!!

15.06.2007 11:20, Andylog

I am not an expert on dragonflies, but it seems very unlikely that there is a local endemic species in the plains, where nothing prevents the spread of the species...
In Novosibirsk, I know one odonata specialist - Oleg Kosterin. You can try to write him a letter and ask about this type, I think he can answer.

Only Calopteryx splendens is known from the Novosibirsk region. There are also Calopteryx japonica altaica Belyshev in the Altai and Kuzbass regions. A new species is highly doubtful. smile.gif But if you find Calopteryx virgo - it would be great, from Siberia it is reliably known only from Tomsk.

Personal data? wink.gif Where, when and who caught it? A photo or scan of the instance?

26.08.2007 15:24, Елена М

From the Moscow region? One of the simpetrums. The coloration is not visible yet. It seems that the legs are about to turn black, and black stripes appear on the sides of the chest - then this is the Sympetrum danae.

this is definitely Calopteryx splendens Harris-a shiny beauty, a male, and not a pretty girl, whose males have pigmented the entire wing area

24.09.2007 16:27, guest: Татьяна

in dragonfly species of the genus Calopteryx, androchromism in females is quite common, i.e. females have the color of males (dark blue body with pigmented black wings), although most often females are smoky green with transparent wings, so you should first pay attention to the presence of secondary genitalia in males (which is inherent only in dragonflies), or for the presence of an ovipositor in females and only then determine up to the species by color. Of course, I would like to see a photo of a dragonfly!!!!!!!! If you have one, you can send it to odonata@mail.ru, I'll try to help. I wish you good luck!
P.S. The beautiful girl C. virgo this year I met in the reserve "Bryansk Forest", Nerussa river, there they are definitely there. They are very fond of clear cool water, highly shaded. Beauty shiny is not as sensitive to turbidity of water and to its contamination as a pretty girl, so it is much more common. Write to us and I'll be happy to respond.

This yoke is blue - aeschna cyanea, in the first picture most likely a young female, because the spots are still pale, in the second-a male

In all likelihood, the third photo (reddish dragonfly) is a crocothemis from the family of real (flat-bellied dragonflies) Libelulidae. Here is a link to this view - http://www2.doncomeco.ru/redbook/catalogue...7/div18/15.html

sex is difficult to determine, you can not see the matrix genitalia... still, it's probably a female. http://www.rosfoto.ru/shop/photo/5335/ - this is WHAT a MALE crocothemis looks LIKE

Please help me identify the following dragonflies. The views may be banal, but I didn't decide to define them myself. All types from Belarus.

I ask for help from specialists in dragonflies. Last summer, I caught a female Calopterys sp. on the edge of a forest in the vicinity of Cheboksary. At first glance, it looks like ordinary C. splendens. However, I took a closer look, the venation is slightly different (specifically, a false pterostigma), and the thorax is higher. And the color of the live dragonfly was more metallic (in the photo of the specimen, the key was slightly changed in Photoshop). The length of the abdomen is 34 mm, the rear wing is 30 mm. Possibly female C.virgo? Sincerely yours, Evgeny.

according to the Hump's determinant (S. N. Gorb, 2000) - in females, C.virgo-smoky wings with brown veins. The pterostigma is small and narrow-1 mm, 5 mm distant from the wing apex
. C. splendens-the wings are smoky green with metallic green veins. The pterostigma is 2 mm or more, CONVEX, and 3 mm distant from the apex.

I am inclined to believe that this is C. splendens (judging by the pterostigma). Color (or rather, a shade of the same color) - it changes a lot both during the life of a dragonfly and when storing collections. The veins may change color during storage and appear brown, although they had a metallic green color when living in the LIGHT.
You can also add the following information: C. virgo-fans of very cool flowing reservoirs, TRANSPARENT, without suspensions in the water column. They live in heavily shaded areas (Popova, 1953). Analyze the location of your find. Very rarely caught in a net smile.gif
C. splendens - can tolerate turbidity of water, heat, siltation, so they are more common in muddy reservoirs.

13. This is not Aeschna cyanea, but Aeschna mixta, the male. The male cyanea has a chest with green rather than yellow stripes, the forearm stripes are wide and oval. The pattern on the abdomen is green on top (except for the last segments), only blue spots on the sides.
