Ground beetles of the world

Community and ForumTaxonomy. ClassificationGround beetles of the world

paganel, 04.09.2007 13:45

To all our fellow ground beetles or simply entomologists,
a huge database of ground beetles of the world has been created, including all genera, palearctic, nearctic and some tropical species, as well as data on their distribution. We need a person who is well versed in programming to create a "shell" for the joint web project "Ground Beetles of the World", which is planned to be developed in the future according to the "Tree of Life" principle-but better! See the email for more details.

Please tell me, did you use the recent Catalog on the Palearctic (book) and the older one on ground beetles north of Mexico (book) or the recent Nearctic Beetles available online, plus Kryzhanovsky (catalog, book), or some other sources?
Thank you.

Try using ready-made engines for sites like Joomla/phpNuke
For many of them there are various components for maintaining directories. IMHO, this is it.

As I understand it, illustrations are not included in it?

recent catalog of Nearctic beetles available online

And where is it available?

Sorry for the stupid question, but why not use the same "Tree of Life"? I can provide some programming help, but I'm writing in C / C++, it's unlikely to be useful to you: -)

Several times, if my memory serves me correctly, I saw something like this, maybe only for individual families, but now I started looking and I can't find it, sorry.
Maybe as some compensation a list of (preliminary) Ground Beetles of the world:

Да, "Checklist of the Western Hemisphere Caraboidea (Coleoptera). Terry Irwin". for some reason, it doesn't work anymore (it doesn't open).

Proect "Tree of Life" razrabatyvaetsa po edinomu shablonu, i ne mozhet obespechit mnogie funkcii. Ya s nimi sviazhuvalsa i ob etom dumal, no oni hotiat sdelat vse srazu, i v itoge to chto sdelali eto doveli sistemu do rodov i to ne vseh, i net ni sinonimov, ni avtorov i godov opisanii, ni rasprostranenia. Sdelat sait po zhuzelicam mira eto mnogo, no vse zhe menshe chem po vsemu zhivomu na planete.
Fotografii est, i esli kto prisoedinitsa, to budet bolshe!

Thank you Paganel. Two questions.

Would you like to do this for the Palearctic only, for starters of course? We would all be happy.
How detailed is your distribution experience? Is it available in Europe, for example, Siberia, or in certain regions for Russia?
Thank you.

Thank you Paganel.
And the distribution data from Jacobson 1905 were not used? Although, of course, a lot of things are outdated and require a lot of hands and hours of work to update.
By the way, if you didn't know, you can use the Translit button to make us read in Cyrillic.

Judging by the author of the project, yes.

As promised, on December 29, the International Day of Biological Diversity, a test version of the family database was launched Carabidae in the world.
I think its author, Alexander Anishchenko, will tell you more about the database itself, and I will briefly tell you about the possibilities for the user of a cross-browser software shell written in PHP, Java and Ajax.

When accessing the database module - http://www.carabidae.ru/index.php?name=Carabidae, we get a list of subfamilies. By clicking on"+", we go to the taxa (tribes) nested in them, which can also be expanded up to subspecies. As a result, we get a visual tree of taxa.
The tree additionally displays:
1. Synonyms of names (pop up when you hover over the main name)
2. A list of countries in the form of alphabetic codes-the decryption pops up when you hover over the code. Bold indicates the country from which it is described, or the first country in alphabetical order.
3. Pictograms :
user posted image - attached images
user posted image- attached files (such as PDF publications)
user posted image- detailed descriptions and additional information.

When you click on the name of a taxon, we go to its individual page, where we see-in the upper-left part-the higher taxa (displayed starting from the tribe), the name of the taxon, synonyms of the name, countries of distribution, a description of the taxon, photos with captions (full-size pops up when you hover over the preview), a link to PDF, and all subordinates taxa (1 level deep) that you can also go to without their descriptions with the same icons and country codes as in the main tree.
Example - http://www.carabidae.ru/Carabidae/inquisit...e_1758_414.html

There are 2 types and 3 types of search organized in the database.
1. Search by keyword - http://www.carabidae.ru/Carabidae/dbsearch.html
Everything seems to be clear here, it allows you to search by text (individual letter combinations) or across the entire database, or by specifying the search to valid names, synonyms, descriptions, or photos, and the search can be organized either separately or in any combination of search areas.
2. Search by geography.
2a. Search by country, select a country, click and get a list of all ground beetles that are found in it. http://www.carabidae.ru/Carabidae/countrysearch.html
2b. Search by region – here you can select a specific part of the countries for which regions are set (for today, this is only China, since the Russian Federation has not been decided, we will reduce it to regions or geographical regions). http://www.carabidae.ru/Carabidae/regionsearch.html

Specifically for translating a very (and even very very) heterogeneous database into an electronic version, a script has been written that shows signs of artificial intelligence) - it spreads out taxa and puts them into each other, recognizes subspecies, and so on. However, it will take a long time to load and check a huge database, accompany it with photos and geographical references. Today, the database is clogged only to subtribes, in some places to genera, more or less Nebrini (http://www.carabidae.ru/Carabidae/nebriini.html) I think that the bare names of taxa (without countries, photos, etc. only with the hierarchy can be done no earlier than the end of January, and provide them with country codes, photos of those beetles that are in the collection, synonyms, and even by March.
In general, the work on updating the database, given the specifics of the group, is clearly eternal).
In addition to the database itself, there will bethis forum (where you are asked to unsubscribe recommendations for improving the database and point out errors), a news feed, and so on. The language of the site is English, I think that the information in it will be perfectly perceived on it, and on the forum it is not a problem to create sections for national communication (for example, to solve purely regional issues).
With suggestions on what should be added to the software part of the database - please go here.
I also ask you to report any beetles and problems, and we'll fix them.

We invite everyone to cooperate,
Happy New Year!

Sincerely,
Evgeny Chibilev

REDBOOK, the database is optimized for IE? And then I have icons in Opera are not displayed...
Ready to help with photos of some tropical species. Maybe I'll at least find out who it is smile.gif

The database is cross-browser based and should work equally in all browsers released after 2000, even in exotic ones. It seems to me not very correct to do optimized for the browser, optimized for resolution, etc.
I just make and watch it in Opera, there are no problems. But not all species have pictograms, but only those who have relevant information. There are only a few of them so far.
Look here - http://www.carabidae.ru/Carabidae/calosom.html , do sycophanta Linne, 1758 and inquisitor Linne, 1758 have pictograms at the bottom?
If not, then check the version of Opera and whether graphics are enabled), download this particular version and see.

30.12.2007 13:36, REDBOOK

According to the photo - of course it is necessary! Just a little later, I'll get rid of the clogging of the database as soon as I add the function of attaching photos directly to the forum and you can dump them there. But this is already in January. And now you can join a SINGLE file in the forum AFTER posting a message using the floppy disk image that appears for the author of the topic. In detail - http://www.carabidae.ru/index.php?name=For...howtopic&id=9#2

Yes, indeed, it was this smile.gif

Another question: I did not find in the database of horses and trachypachine, i.e. You are considering sem. Carabidae without including Cicindelinae and Trachypachinae in the rank of subfamilies?

With a New Base in the New Year!
Creating a database of living organisms requires a dynamic and evolving structure that is responsive to changes in our knowledge of the animal world. Such an idea was suggested when, at last, with great difficulty and expense, we managed to get hold of the magnificent book "Catalog of Ground Beetles of the Palearctic" (Lobl & Smetana, 2003), and noticed that in just a year it was very outdated. And the subsequent revision of the nebria of the world (Ledoux & Roux, 2005) literally left no stone unturned from their old taxonomy. Thus, the idea was born to create an electronic version of the catalog of ground beetles of the world, easily accessible and constantly updated. It took the next couple of years to combine the disparate information and bring together the numerous taxonomic systems of ground beetles, at least to a first approximation. However, you can get acquainted with the literature used in the general section of the family description, as well as in the characteristics of tribes and genera.
We offer you the result, and we ask you not to judge strictly on its first timid steps. We invite everyone to cooperate and will be grateful to specialists in individual groups who want to take on the responsibility of updating data. This work is endless, as is the path of knowledge, but the general benefit will serve as a reward and satisfaction for hard work.

30.12.2007 14:21, paganel

The situation of some families is still unstable, and there is no generally accepted opinion on them. These include racehorses, trachypachids, and rhizodids. We plan to eventually include the horses in the database.

You can add Horses at the subfamily level to the database, so that this question disappears. With an indication that the section is under development.

And please, post suggestions in the forum carabidae.ru , this will be much more convenient for us.

Added another feature - photo gallery, where photos from the database are automatically placed. You can view an example of how it works based on Carabini tribes.

I can't find out how to ask a question or leave a request without registering before.
Tell me please.
In my opinion, the blue background is a little bright, I want to leave the site as soon as possible.

probably not a little bright, since I want to quickly) we'll redraw the design in general later, probably it's temporary now, just my hands don't reach everything, now I'm writing a library module, several functions for the database (mainly optimizing speed and convenience) like stubs in the search for "nothing found" and showing the subgeneric name in parentheses (already done) and commercial sites still have to be done in addition to the main work)
Background colors are now prigashu, but not dramatically so that the theme is not redrawn.
You can't send it without registration, and we'll suffocate from spam if you remove it, but it's simple and doesn't even require confirmation of your email address - right here
