Good day to all.

There is a possibility of traveling to Uzbekistan (to distant relatives). Of course I'm interested in catching insects there. If anyone has any information and opinions, please share, because in general I can not imagine how it is and what is there. Judging by the reviews of tourists-tough, they want bribes everywhere, special attention is paid to the "whites". There are a number of questions:
1. Is it possible to catch fish there at all, in public, as the authorities and local police treat it?
2. How to get the material through customs, airport and other security checks in Tashkent and Moscow?
3. What difficulties can there be with the import of equipment (net, stain, ethyl acetate, ammonia, mattresses, etc.)?
4. Is there any information about the entomofauna of this wonderful country, so that at least you know what to count on, where to catch?

I was in Uzbekistan for work. Traditional advice: don't swing the net in public. In general, do not advertise the hobby. It is better to take the material in your luggage (if you don't look like a guest worker flying to earnsmile.gifmoney). And the beetles there are beautiful..

Wow!!!!!yes, it's just GREAT!!!THERE IS EVERYTHING!!!and what do you need?and most importantly-When are we going???now-eat shish kebab, pilaf, drink tea.sit up straight, sniff in 2 holes.but from the spring, and preferably in the summer.mid, early July...!and looking again, what do you need?how to decide, soap.I'll send it to a couple of places.you can share the material lol.gifat the expense of orders -but it's a bit strict.it was in the mid-90s. and the nav probably screwed up the nuts, but!all in the luggage!!!and without any acetates, ethyls!et nav no one likes.everything is on dry!bags,mattresses.net-but what's your dog's business, my cat's life.aesli there are exits to any bamazhku with a signet-super!the people are good, kind!Everyone loves money!and bargain!always and everywhere!EAST IS A DELICATE MATTER!!! wink.gif

Now it is clear, there is not much to do there, the reference point is for the end of spring-beginning of summer. Location-Samarkand and the surrounding area. I am interested in almost everything - ground beetles, plates, goldfinches, barbels, butterflies-hawkmoth, sailboats, etc. This is understandable about luggage, but how likely is it that the luggage will not be shoveled? Especially when you are one "Russian" for the entire plane. smile.gif Haggling is good, you can do it, but you don't want to get into trouble.

Well, about offhand a couple of these beautiful views? smile.gif

16.11.2007 15:55, Ironbutt

Nooooo!luggage is not shoveled!they will get tired of swallowing dust in wet weather!!!Don't forget to take the clones with you, my dear Fellow!otherwise, you won't get enough of everything!I understand that Uzbekistan is a small country, but the entomofauna, I'll tell you wow!until now, the people of b'etsya, just can not describe.Plates, sawyers,zlatki-so you will climb around the vicinity of Samarkand.but karabusy, black-bodied, red scarabs-welcome to Kyzylkum.spring is beautiful there!and about Sailboats and other highlands.but it will be too early.second half of June.P. apollonius will go.there's a lot of it.

Based on the experience of the neighboring Central Asian country (Turkmenistan).
Two main problems: be careful with drugs and it is better not to discuss politics (more often). The security services there are a bit scary.
If the luggage doesn't smell like drugs, they don't disembowel it (I've never had it checked).
Well, as we have already said , you need to be more modest. It is better not to wave the net in front of the authorities.

Hello, Swansson.
Personally, I am interested in many live cultures of butterflies from Uzbekistan, first of all - Parnassius gren, Hypermnestra helios pupae, Papilio machaon (local subspecies), Papilio alexanor (if you are lucky), hawkmoth and saturnia, as well as wintering gren of pigeons. Some things are easier to collect than steamed turnips (Gren parnassus), some things are more difficult (Hypermnestra is difficult to feed, because the young of this species will die on stale food in the summer, but if there is a pair of leaves near the house, and there it is enough, you can grow it). In exchange, I can provide a lot of live crops and dry land. If you need instructions on breeding , I will send you in more detail. I can just buy the material for cash. Taking out grena (butterfly eggs), and pupae, too, is not particularly difficult... If you are interested , we will write you off via my email - ruscolanicus@mail.ru

It's easier to find a local entomologist here. And establish contact with him.So I won't order much of anything.I only wish you a successful fishing trip.Well, if you manage to find someone from the locals with a net, then go boldly to contact. He will tell you places, give you tips, and be a partner for the future. And you can send me his address shuffle.gif

Train, yes with joy!!! If there is an opportunity to take it with you, then at least I will crawl on foot from January, I will smile.gifgo to Uzbekistan better than to Turkey somewhere.. For me, it's better not to go anywhere in the summer to the sea and other types of stupid holidays, but to go pozhmyakat local insects smile.gif

18.11.2007 0:31, guest: Антон

Taler, you probably addressed your post to Swansson? Sobsna, it is he who is going to Uzbekistan. To be honest, I strongly doubt that there are any entomologists left there. There was Legezin, but he has been in Russia for a long time. A babay with a net to see... I'd like to see it, chesna-chesna! ;-)))
You don't do any wildlife, by any chance?" There you have the most beautiful sailboats found - P. saharae, P. alexanor, A. apollinus, P. mnemosyne (I don't remember the subspecies offhand). And in general, there are a lot of things...

"Alive", is that what you mean by alive?Well, I catch them alive. But they don't live long smile.gif.I don't do eggs and pupae.I tried it once, but it's all zeros. So there's no question about that.Yes,there are sailboats, but not so many.In principle, almost everyone was named.P. saharae-quite rare(flies from Sinai).P. alexanor is also rare.Although not stray, but the years are very short and not massive. In short, if something interisuet from "sushnyak", then welcome to the subforum "Butterflies for exchange", maybe that will grow together. beer.gif

Dear Swansson, I envy you! Very, very much! I haven't been to Uzbekistan myself, but I've seen mattresses from there! Cool beetles out there! With ethyl acetate correctly say-it is better not to take it. The most suitable option is to buy on-site nail polish remover without acetone. Yes, I think you know yourself! If there is an opportunity to collect alcohol material of millipedes and woodlice, I will be VERY grateful to you! In exchange, I can offer beetles from the North Caucasus and from the steppe part of the Rostov region.

Thank you for the offer. If something happens, I'll keep it in mind.

Collect Prioninae, Asias (these are especially interesting to me personallysmile.gif), Agapanthia, Ropalopus. there are also such pleasant beetles as Turkmenigena, Xenoleptura, Turkaromia, etc.

Thank you, this is all cool, but you need to know exactly where they live. What should be the trees, rocks, grass, weather conditions, etc. This is especially true for those who have not caught anywhere else. except for the European part.

There are conflicting opinions about this. Apparently, everything is very individual. As for any shmonov Uzbekistan - at the moment, most likely the most "fun" of the local fraternal republics, second only to Turkmenistan and not quite fraternal Afghanistan.

19.01.2008 20:13, savour

Friends last year went to Tashkent on bicycles from Kemerovo. They say there were no problems with the locals and the local cops at all. All nice people, not belmesa in Russian, but everyone in the city speaks. True, they are not entomologists, photographed again)))

2 Swansson: I also have distant relatives in Uzbekistan, they called me not once, but it's kind of scary to go confused.gifto be honest, they don't like our brother there by and large. I'm not going to Samarkand, but to Namangan-a province in fact, although a large city. Ferghana. There are no Russians left at all, as I understand it. The persecution was real in the 90's. My aunt left and couldn't live there, even though her husband was Uzbek. And now they say on the contrary they call the Russians back, but no one wants to return the palazzo...

So be sure to tell us on arrival what and how. It doesn't seem so bad.

I spent half my childhood there, the memories are awesome, as if heaven on earth jump.gifreally wants to go...

06.02.2008 23:49, zerg69

cute Uzbek cops turned out all the insoles and underpants felt and even put a gun to the head...and they only needed a little money from us...for a white mister is now a rarity there...samarkand is a beautiful city and the entomofauna is interesting, although in several other places...be very careful with the local cops...and here's another tip: currency operations are also a favorite setup...let your relatives change it, but the rate in banks is 2 times lower...

For dry P. saharae I will sell my soul!!!! t00m@pnz.ru =)

Does P. saharae exist there? The type locality is North Africa. It gets knocked up in Sinai and Palestine. Here is P. alexanor mentioned somewhere for wed Asia.

Gentlemen, I apologize for the interruption, but after reading a lot of passion about my country (Uzbekistan), I wanted to make a little clarity.
Anything that is not clear to the local population causes either interest (children's) or a desire to ban (janitor's syndrome with a badge). With a rudimentary understanding of motivations, you can use both the former and the latter for self-serving purposes.
I've been living in Tashkent since 1985 and still haven't regretted coming here from Russia.
This is a saying. Now to the point.
Having a certain interest in the nature of my region, I also bring insects from my travels. I don't specialize in collecting, but I don't pass six-legged animals when I can. I go out of town almost every weekend. Once a year I go to Kyzylkum. As a rule, entomological material is collected.
If anyone has an interest in our region, I can help on a parity basis. You can check the details and goals in your personal correspondence.
It is also possible to catch specifics under the order. I don't guarantee special trips, but I can pick up a few things along the way. Sending to the capital with fellow travelers. Regularly, but not rhythmically. Usually it doesn't cause any special problems.
As an example, on the previous weekend (21-23. 03. 08) in the foothills (~40 km from Tashkent), racehorses, kravchiks, and copra were already running with might and main... and the other dung brothers...

Wah! Are there any biologists or naturalists left in Babyston???
Protey2, could you please leave your email address? I am very much interested in animals. How to collect write (nothing complicated in principle). I can buy or exchange it for dry land and livestock. For your choice.
I am also interested in the seeds of many plants....

Can I tell you more? What can you catch in mid-April in the Tashkent region???

Up to a dozen species of Ont Phages, the same number of Aphodia, and something else that lives there...
Kravchiki 2-3 species, chernotelki (mostly Prosodes) up to a dozen species. Various small carabids (Brachinus, Lebia, Pterostichus, Chlaenius...). Carabus 1-2 species (you need to search purposefully). Steeds of a couple of types are common. Some plates are already flying. etc........
This is if you catch without fanaticism and "bare" hands.
In April, we are already in full swing of the fishing season. Although, of course, in the mountains (from 1500 m) sometimes it still snows. Peak season in Tash. regions from the end of March (plains and foothills) to the end of June (up to 2000 m). Higher is naturally longer.
I usually start the season from the end of February. So April is a very good time for"hunting". But it all depends on the transport capabilities, because it is convenient. the area is very densely populated, and in the few gaps m/y housing even denser plowed and sown.

The photo shows fragments of one-day mining on April 2, 4, 11, 2010, 2011.

Too bad... Non-plowed biotopes are mostly in the mountains, and there spring is later. Main year: mid-May - mid-June (1000-1500 m above sea level)

For reference, here is an excerpt from my database.
Dates of fees in Tash. areas and degree of rarity according to my observations.

Potocia marginicollis: 16.05-27.06 (mass)
Potocia prototricha: 10.05-23.07 (pts. rare)
Potocia interruptocostata: 16.05 (frequent)
Potocia agglomerate: 16.05 (common type)

Potocia cyanescens: 05.05-01.08 (extremely rare)

Hello. Are there any butterfly collectors in Uzbekistan?
I myself am an aspiring collector, and I live in Samarkand. It is very difficult to collect butterflies alone in your home country. There is no collection material yet, but there is equipment and, most importantly, a desire to collect.
