Insects from Tanzania

Community and ForumEntomological collectionsInsects from Tanzania

Sdubanah, 16.08.2008 16:14

Dear forumchane! )

I'm going to go to Tanzania on New Year's Eve.
I can catch insects there, and I don't have any complexes about digging in feces and corpses in principle.
There are two problems.
First. Does anyone need it?
Second. I'm a layman. Accordingly, if there are people interested in this action (preferably in St. Petersburg), then they should help me with advice - how to catch and how to transport, how to register the conditions in which the insect is caught. You may need help with the hardware. But this is not a question, I can buy equipment if I know what and where.

If such an offer is relevant to anyone, write here and call 911-980-92-89, or on Vkontakte, Korotkevich Evgeny Petersburg SPbLTA.

Thank you in advance.

In my opinion, everyone here wants to be such people. Sdubanah despite the fact that you are a layman, catch large beetles of all that fall under your hands, bright and unimaginable, and you will not lose. And throw the material on mattresses and in luggage, so that there are no problems at customs. From the equipment you will need a net, 5-10 pieces of stain, in the chemical store find some ether (ethyl acetate, chloroform) and of course mattresses, where the caught good is laid out. You can still catch butterflies, it's not difficult, depending on how ignorant you are and yet. You don't need any more equipment as a beginner. although you can still buy a DRL lamp, it will be a great help, especially if you can't catch and run (you never know the local population is aggressive, so be sure to buy a lamp). If you have a house on the ground, you can catch insects without leaving the cash register. I do not consider myself a great specialist, but if you are interested, I can send you a photo of how to stick mattresses, what can be built from
baits, what traps are at the place of stay. If you need a consultation, please contact us.

Trofim: no need to load people.

Sdubanah:
the simplest mattress variation is a simple newspaper + cotton wool in a plastic box. A well-sealed plastic box is taken, where a newspaper is placed, cut to size with curved edges, and cotton wool is placed on it, where the material will then be placed (the main thing is to write labels on top of each mattress-who is caught where and when!)
This is the simplest option.
For butterflies, you need a net and bags. In principle, you can borrow a net with packages from some St. Petersburg entomologist for the sake of this, I think many will be happy for the sake of the material.
For collecting beetles, one medium-sized jar and one box or jar is enough. In the first jar, you can throw beetles and other insects, except butterflies, and fill it all with pure alcohol or ethyl acetate (it is also advisable to throw grass or paper there. so that the beetles do not gnaw or break each other). Large beetles and preferably all butterflies can be carefully pricked with an insulin syringe between the pronotum and the body, or through the back (the main thing is not in the wings or legs or other chitinized parts!!)

You should search everywhere - on plants, trees (any and in any parts), on sand, near water, in thickets, etc., etc. - under rocks, under mud.. You shouldn't take a flashlight with you, it's too stressful.. It is easier to wipe under street lamps and other lamps on the street - there is always something flying there!

21.08.2008 20:53, Трофим

I didn't load anyone. I just said what I would do if I had the chance.

21.08.2008 21:08, Vabrus

I think that Andrey is right. For a normal person does not need to drag 15 bug cans to Tanzania with him, because 13 of them will clearly stand idle. In general, my friends brought insects in matchboxes and boxes of chocolates on cotton wool. And nothing, the material was well preserved. The only specific item worth taking is a net. And then, as we all know, more than a dozen butterflies will be spoiled until you press down properly (not until the intestines fall smile.gifout), etc. So the simplest thing is boxes+cotton wool+ether (ethyl acetate)+a syringe. That's all. And most importantly, of course, labels wink.gif

21.08.2008 22:27, RippeR

it is better to prick butterflies with an insulin syringe (you can even use vinegar, since you can not carry it, but buy it on the spot) in the chest, then the chances of damaging it are minimal.
And the net.. This is good, but for the sake of "just like that" you can't create it..

I tried to contact Sdubanah on the social network vkontakte - something does not respond. Probably intimidated a person with "insulin syringes", "chitinized parts" and "cotton mattresses".

I tried to get in touch, even talked on the phone - but the person, as I understood, is pretty busy...so it's not that simple...still ahead wink.gif

I also tried to contact you, but it was a bummer. If you succeed , please write to me on vkontakte or by mail. ru

Similarly.
There is no connection with it. You can't use your home phone number in your profile either.
I wonder why the person advertised?

Probably a study of demand...

08.09.2008 17:38, Dabr

I managed to get in touch (even a couple of times), but to little avail...nothing definite

I have never believed and do not believe in a positive result in such cases, and I am surprised at the interest shown.
I'm sorry !!

Tanzania is a weird thing!!!
Ottedova such golden mountains always promise.......
And in the end, Omin also transferred the money to them.
Maybe this person, out of simplicity of heart
, was led by the fact that they would arrange a safari for 100
bucks a day and goliaths in bags for 3 bucks apiece-
but the inviting party always asks for a small
deposit - 400-600 ue for registration and permits,
after which it disappears, and after that the person becomes
no longer interested. to Tanzania.

All this is solved very simply - no money in advance, only after the fact or later.

It seems that the time for wild fishing in the tropics is over altogether. According to colleagues, it is no longer possible to wander freely through the jungle with a net almost anywhere - only by prior agreement with local commercial, scientific, state and so on. structures. Troubles range from" didn't catch a damn thing " to serious problems with the authorities. Africa is particularly marked by the utter uncertainty of the results.

Old man, in this case, it seems that this applies only to citizens of the former USSR, because comrades from over the hill feel quite comfortable there. A Czech friend of mine came from Tanzania a month ago, and another one from Guatemala even less than that. Both are happy and content. What kind of insects are there, such animals were dragged from there...
Take off your shoes, look around and think - maybe we are doing something wrong or not thinking about it? No one promises that upon someone's arrival, all local residents will immediately rush to create all the best conditions for the "great Russian guest" and adapt to his habits and character.
You just need to change your way of thinking.. and then we will be happy.

Czechs are especially comfortable in prison in India. lol.gif

09.09.2008 12:00, Mikhail F. Bagaturov

Do not forget that our people have also been there, and not only in India, but also in Indonesia and Madagascar. But taking into account the number of Czechs or Germans who go there, in comparison with ours, with the same goals - the percentage ratio is about 9% and 99% - "feel the difference" is called...
So, nothing to have fun about really.

09.09.2008 12:16, Monstr

It's good to "go" to prison. It's bad to stay there. Our consulate, by the way, spat on Russians in prison in 90% of cases. This is not the case with the Germans.
Of course, you can go everywhere. And it's illegal to catch insects and animals, too... it would be lucky. But the conversation was about the possibilities of fishing by prior arrangement, wasn't it? This is the formation of comfort and safety, as well as in some cases and elementary carelessness of the result.
By the way, the Czechs, in my experience, often have such-it seems that the conversation was about this?
As for the imprisonment of respected colleagues, people knew what they were doing. If you are traveling under an illegal fee - and in most cases, this is what it is.... well, there is a chance to sit down.

I agree with your last sentence. As for the bourgeoisie, I doubt that they came there as savages and mowed down wherever they liked. Surely, everything was coordinated with the local guys. The impoverished population usually does not miss the opportunity to warm up to foreigners.

Where does this come from?
The conversation was about a man offering to" fish " in Tanzania.
What are the agreements?

I wouldn't believe it either, if in a certain percentage of cases it still didn't "shoot" %)
And a couple of times like!

I was talking about the final result of collecting a person who has never dealt with catching insects. If we are talking about the "background" collection of "data", this is one thing (I don't need such fees in principle), but something more professional? I doubt it.....

15.09.2008 17:32, Mikhail F. Bagaturov

WELL, maybe I'm not enough of a professional, because in Tanzania I've never collected it myself....

18.12.2008 22:36, swerig

Is there a result for Tanzania or not???
