I use a Garmin GPS navigator. Maps are available online, so it's quite convenient... True, the price is certainly too high for many (~$500), just like for me, I had a hard time at work.
It is very convenient to use the Google Earth program, especially the pro version. There are fairly well-drawn photos of the area that are tightly linked to the area. Plus the ability to save the screen image in high resolution (up to 3600x2800 pixels). Cars are visible on the roads smile.gif

I have an HP 4700 + GPS GlobalSat BC-337 PDA (this is the kind of thing that is inserted into the CF slot of the PDA or into the PCMCI of the laptop via an adapter). As software - OziExplorer (there is a version for PocketPC and for the "big" computer)

For this purpose, you can link your own bank cards, including those from Google.

Asus 636 with a built-in GPS module. Ozi Explorer. General staff maps. There are no problems if the binding is correct. I've been using it for the fourth year now. Google Maps is a great program if you have a broadband connection. I use it to update general staffs or if the required square is missing. Making a working map from Google Map is a real task, but quite a hemorrhoid.

My friend, driving a car, uses a bunch of Asus EEE netbook (or HP 4700 PDA) + GPS JJConnect Registrar. Devices communicate via Bluetooth.
The above-mentioned GPS device is not just a navigator, but a logger. She can write tracks herself, and then merge them when connected to the computer and show them on the map. A very useful feature, in my opinion.
About GoogleEarth, I can say the following: if you have a laptop (if you are traveling by car, for example) you can merge the desired area into the cache in advance, then connect the laptop with some GPS thread on the way, turn on GoogleEarth and order it to show images from the cache. Voila! You don't need internet access.

Thank you Alexander for the links. Cool program. I use etrex H myself. Inexpensive model. At home, I now use Ozi Explorer to transfer particularly interesting data to the map. Before that, it was just a list in Excel of what each dot means. I wonder if someone has GIS skills, and what prospects this program gives in entomology, maybe someone has some illustrative photos to have an idea.

GIS is not a specific program, but a family of them. I don't understand the question about "demonstration photos" - what should be shown in the photo? About the prospects, too, is not entirely clear.

30.06.2009 18:31, Трофим

And you are personally familiar with some programs. And prospects are their direct application in entomology. By the way, Ozi Explorer belongs to the GIS family. I'm interested in plotting species ' habitats, as spots, hatches, etc.

OziExplorer works with standard image formats, so you can safely draw anything in regular image editors. These OziEx drawings are not a hindrance. The program itself does not reach the GIS status.
The most famous example of GIS is Google Maps (aka Google Earth).

It seems to me that a program that works with vector maps like MapEdit is better suited for this than ozyexplorer with its own raster graphics.

I'm familiar (but I can't say that I'm a cool specialist) with MapInfo. Well, I do not know about spots and hatching, but you can display points of finds on the map.

Unfortunately, everything in the "one basket" does not happen! Different tasks are solved by different software tools. Orientation on the terrain, route planning-some, data processing (working with points and tracks) - others, analysis of cartographic data (including drawing areas) - the third. Unfortunately, the latter is not yet very accessible in full scale (as implemented in European atlases of plants, birds, etc.). At the clumsy level, you can do it in any GIS, but to prepare for printing, you need to try separately...
In general, we have accumulated a wealth of experience in dealing with various navigation systems, kits, programs, maps, etc. Please contact us if someone needs it.
For navigation, use the following:
In the car-GPS mouse + laptop (EE PC) + OziExplorer with General Staff maps
In your pocket-Garmin 76 + Roads of Russia + Local vector maps corrected with pens in MapEdit

This is the second time I've heard about general Staff maps. But this is probably for Russia? What scale do you have there? Maps have a grid on them so that they can be calibrated. We have only two more or less tolerable maps for Moldova: 1: 1 00 000 and 2: 00 000. The first truth of gdl is cm = km only for Chisinau neighborhoods. I would like to find or download a map from Google, but I don't know how yet. Just getting used to it.

General Staff maps are available for the entire former USSR (maybe for other countries, but I haven't seen them). Definitely available on <url>. But there they are in the usual form-scanned paper. Yandex. Navigator probably needs something else?

From an incorrectly created theme:
I gave myself a Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 android smartphone for the new year, which has a bad navigation module on board, and there was a need to choose maps (for the Moscow region in my case). I came to the conclusion that for the near Moscow region there is nothing better than banal Yandex.maps. This version is currently available from the Android Market: https://market.android.com/details?id=ru.yandex.yandexmaps . And to be honest, I already got sick of the satellite map cache for it via GPRSlol.gif, can anyone have a ready-made cache? mol.gif

20.02.2012 18:23, Michail M

Since version 2.20, Yandex. Maps has enabled the function of downloading offline maps of Russian cities. These sets are generated by Yandex itself.
To download it, you need an Internet connection. Then you will see the "Download map" item, where you will need to select the city and the existing map (Yandex Map Editor, map editor, etc.).
The app downloads the selected map itself, unpacks it, and places the cache.

If you have a loaded map, then to work with the cache, you need to create the yandexmaps/cache directory on the SD card (if it has not already been created)
Next, put the map parts in folders with numbers (corresponding to the scale)

you can download the cache here http://ymm.sytes.net/

personally, I like navitel, look for it, there are no problems downloading it... Well, for an amateur there is an OSI for android

Yes, I've already leaked the Yandex Map Editor, but Sputnik isn't on the list. I have to pick at the pieces, which is a chore. That's why the cache asked for

it seems that the developers write that there is both a satellite and a map... Today I will try to play on my tablet, if something happens, I will unsubscribe...

Here is a quick screenshot: there is no satellite there for any region (although take a look. what the hell is not joking):

Is the Yandex. Maps version from the Android Market worth it? Just maybe I shouldn't have put it there? Something was missing in this case in version 2.21 from there.

They offer a Garmin Etrex Vista CX navigator for 6 thousand rubles. Used (possibly stolen, since there are no documents). Maps are loaded. Do you think it's worth taking or looking for better options (price-quality)?

If without documents, and even more so stolen, I think you should not take it. I judge the truth by my smartphone on Google Android.
I can track it from my computer by GPS and just by communication towers anywhere in the world easily. And if necessary, remotely put here this thing (I tried it, it works).
Draw conclusions: stolen equipment can be unpleasant with a surprise.

preferably with maps of L. O. I don't want to get lost in the forest,
- I want a pedometer in the gadget(measuring the distance from points A and B),
- satellite maps with terrain designations
-AA battery for 2300-2700mA / h or battery: Li-Ion, 2300 mA / h-3100 mAh
-5000r limit.

In order not to get lost in the forest using the LPS, the logic of the map in the device, especially detailed, is not needed.
The main point is to mark the point of entry or return, and navigate by it.
It is better to have a paper map in especially severe cases(and preferably a compass, the ATO will suddenly turn off the State Department of Housing and Communal Services))))))

For WinMobile, there are many good programs with the function of measuring distance, drawing tracks, exporting them to Googlers, setting waypoints, and so on.
For example, the free program GPSCycleComputer.
There was never any need for maps, especially outside localities

21.09.2012 8:36, atata

It doesn't suit me, I don't know how to make maps in these programs.
compass with a bubble, how to use compasses I forgot how to print a map I don't know where and it's a chore...

So there is no need to make maps, this program that I wrote - draws the path traveled, calculates the distance, taking into account the height of the terrain and without, allows you to mark control points, essno determines the north-south, shows the shortest path to a given point, and then you can export all this to Google-erz, for example. And at the same time, it works when the PDA is turned off(high energy saving). And there are a lot of such programs under the VM.

Sell tourist navigator Garmin eTrex10, new. 4500 rubles. Or I'll trade it for butterflies.
