How do you dissect large, hairy insects

Community and ForumEntomological collectionsHow do you dissect large, hairy insects

Entomon, 09.02.2012 9:39

Since I will need to straighten Saturnia pyri and Attacus atlas in the spring, I need to know how to dissect them.

nothing complicated. Be careful with the appropriate size straightener.

I mean, how to dissect the abdomen?

I mean, how to dissect the abdomen?

And why? At home, and so dries. Except in certain cases.

So at atlas and pear saturnia it is so big! Won't it rot?

10.02.2012 19:39, metall-mikki

..don't worry - Saturnia's belly dries perfectly...it does not flatten or lose its shape...just don't put the butterfly straightener in wet places)
The only thing is to support the end of the abdomen with a piece of cotton wool so that the abdomen does not stretch...Well, I think you already know what I'm talking about)

Thank you all for your answers! I suggest that you write questions on spreading in this topic (if someone else has them ) , so I ask the moderator to rename the topic to "Nuances in spreading insects" .

Since you created it, you can rename it yourself.

After drying, it is better to break off the abdomen (in males) and degrease in acetone.

I'm still new to the forum and didn't know about this.

+1 about breaking and soaking.

... purely out of curiosity - and why do the procedure with breaking and soaking?...

I think that if the abdomen gets fat, then it is bathed

I'm not a "butterfly man", but I believe that the keywords in the AntSkr post are "in males". Apparently, this refers to the treatment of the abdomen to ensure the possibility of subsequent preparation of the genitals.

The bellies of butterflies that are prone to obesity (bombycoids, morpho) are separated for another reason. If the abdomen is fat, fat can spread from it to the wings. Therefore, after soaking in a degreaser and drying, the abdomen is glued in place.

Why then does AntSkr offer this manipulation only for males?

This procedure is done for both sexes, although females naturally grow fat more often.
I don't know why there are males. After all, genital preparations are also made from the abdomen of females.
IMHO, in a fattened abdomen, a slow decomposition process begins, which means that this will also affect the tissues of the genitals.

13.02.2012 16:10, metall-mikki

..is there still something left in the abdomen after it is completely dry, which can later decompose?
As for me, so after a long drying on the straightener, all organic matter, with the exception of bacteria, loses its ability to decompose, etc.... well, unless if the humidity rises, then the material will start to deteriorate...

I'm not an expert on fats.
There is always water in the composition of animal fat, and if I'm not mistaken, about 0.3%.

13.02.2012 20:31, metall-mikki

... well, with water, everything is clear, but when the insects completely dry out on the straightener, according to the idea, the water completely evaporates from the bodies of insects...

Google the word "taxidermy". For example - http://zoomet.ru/zas/zaslavski_2_1zi.html

I've searched a lot of pages, but everything is only indirect.

If you want to save a bat for a collection, then the principle is the same as when dissecting mammals to make a collection carcass.
You need to remove the skin first, process it and fill it with cotton wool. One wing of bats spreads out to the side, and the second is folded, in general, more details here:

Good question. I'll join you. May Bolivar forgive us for being off-topic. But please don't delete it. I have also thought about this issue many times.
