White coating on beetles

Community and ForumEntomological collectionsWhite coating on beetles

Good day to all! Straightened a couple of barbels from Peru, now drying. The female is perfect, and the male (paws, whiskers, head, etc.) has a white coating. After soaking, I tried to wash off the household appliances. using soap didn't help. Already on the drying ones, I tried to wash it off with ammonia - again it didn't work out. Please help me! Is it possible to remove this plaque (mold?) on a ready-made (dry) beetle?

I don't know about tropical mold, but our domestic mold is usually well scraped off with pin number 00 after daily soaking in 70 alcohol. I saved a lot of specimens like this, including even butterflies. But if the process has gone so far that under the influence of fungal enzymes, the cuticle itself has largely decomposed, then nothing will save it. Are you completely sure that this plaque is mold, and not a natural wax coating that occurs in many insects? It would be nice to put a sample of it under a microscope.

Thank you for your reply! I'm far from a professional and I can't be sure of anything. I may be wrong about the mold. I am sending you a photo of a male being struck by something white. And for comparison, a female of the same species, but absolutely pure. I apologize for the quality of the photo, I couldn't have done better. Unfortunately, there is no microscope.

I can't upload the photo for some reason. They don't want to discount.

And they won't. Use a third-party photo hosting service. But, I'm afraid, it will be difficult to understand what kind of raid it is from an amateur-quality photo and scale. It is better to search the Internet for photos of other males of this species, if there is a raid on them, then everything is OK. If there are no photos, look for the first description of the species or the identifier, it should say about the raid, if it is characteristic. I know that some bronzes have a waxy coating that is characteristic of males, but I don't know about barbels.

I don't know how to upload a photo, I don't really know my way around here. Thank you again for your help!!! This is not wax, but mold. I checked with famous entomologists on Facebook. I was advised a lot of things, but I dared to apply my own method. Smeared all the chitin with acetone (washed very carefully with a hard brush), and the beetle took the original perfect image! It really helped! Now the problem is solved. Once again, thank you for not leaving me in the lurch!!!

Experts, tell me, goliaths can be washed in acetone to remove the yellowish hue of a flying beetle?

Alexander, why do you need acetone? use "nefras" or "galoshes", but the process of bathing Goliath takes several weeks. on this issue there is a separate topic - "butterflies in fat"
ps I wrote to you...don't get distracted...about abraksov with DV -please help me determine. soap r-mail#inbox.ru send an empty email to this address mol.gif

Yes, I generally do not care what, as long as the bug does not peel off. Again, the yellowish coating on Goliath is most likely not fat at all, but dirt that he managed to smear himself with during his lifetime. Well, they didn't answer me in that topic, so I decided to try my luck here.
I wrote the letter.
