user posted imageCommon ant lion (Myrmeleon formicarius). The insect is more like a dragonfly — long-winged, thin-bodied. However, unlike dragonflies, it has rather large club-shaped antennae. And the wings of a sitting insect are folded on its back in a "house", like moths. The ant lions (Myrmeleontidae) are a separate family of insects in the order Reticuloptera. They got their name because of the lifestyle of the larvae. The larva of the ant lion is wingless and the body shape somewhat resembles a tick.

I would like to add about the lifestyle of larvae. They dig craters in the sand with crumbling edges and bury themselves at the very bottom. The insect, having stepped on such an edge, falls into the funnel and is grasped by the powerful mandibles of the larva. The most common ones are ants, which explains the name.

Interestingly, if there are three Myrmeleon species in Latvia, how many are there in the south of Russia? And by what key this instance is defined by you - I would like to know so that you can use it yourself! Thank you in advance.

On a yellow background, not Myrmeleon, but Acanthaclysis - a representative of another tribe. For a precise definition, try contacting Dr. Krivokhatsky via the website of the Zoological Institute (SPb).
With best wishes for further success,
