Malashka mednaya (bronze) - Malachius aeneus, Malachius, Melyridae
Moscow region, Ramenskiy district, near the village of Khripan.
Summer 2006: Original date / time: 2006:05:31 09:56:32
Malashka bronze - Malachius aeneus. Up to 0.7 cm in length. There are about 20 species of this family in Central Europe. It lives in meadows, river valleys, and wet places. On sunny days, it is found on flowers among grasses and bushes. It feeds on pollen, as well as small insects, such as aphids. Mating behavior is peculiar: males encourage females to bite them on the abdomen until both partners come to a state of sexual arousal and mate. They feed on small animals. When startled (for example, when an enemy attacks), bright red saccoid glands protrude along the sides of the body, but we don't smell them (maybe they serve to attract the other sex?).
