Subgenus Procerus (Carabus)

Nilson, 16.03.2007 20:37

Procerus (Carabus) caucasicus caucasicus Ad., 1817 - 25.V-10.VII.2002, Сев. Ossetia, roc. Alagira
is probably the most famous endemic ground beetle of the Caucasus. The beetle is distributed in mountainous areas up to an altitude of 2000 m south of the Maikop-Makhachkala line, as well as in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, and Turkey. Similar species are found in mountainous areas of Europe. Interestingly, the European P. gigas is the only non-threatened species in the genus Sarabus listed in the Gard - Severa index. Our situation is different: beetle in the red book of the Russian Federation and regional red books.

Externally, it differs very clearly from Procerus scabrosus tauricus in the shape of the pronotum - it narrows strongly from the base to the apex, when in scabrosus tauricus the apex of the pronotum is almost square!

Carabus (Procerus) caucasicus colchicus Motschulsky-Abkhazia, 8 km North-east of Tsandrypsha (Gantiadi) in a mountain forest, September 26, 2007, length 56 mm. The female.
Carabus caucasicus colchicus is known from the Sochi region and the south-west. highlands of the Krasnodar Territory (this fragment of the range runs approximately along the line Gelendzhik-Anapa-Tunnelnaya-Ubinskaya-Novodmitrievskaya-Gelendzhik). Described from Oni (Georgia). Carabus caucasicus colchicus is mainly confined to mesophytic deciduous and mixed forests, especially in rocky and calcareous (karst) terrain. However, the characteristic stations of extremely western populations from the Gelendzhik-Anapa region are closer to those of the nominative subspecies. It was celebrated in gardens and parks. Beetles are most active at night, but sometimes there is also daytime activity. They occur throughout the growing season, starting in April. They are more active in spring and early summer. At the same time, mating and oviposition occur.

I haven't seen any pink ones, but ink-purple ones with a reddish tinge around the edges are rare.

Variants of colors of Crimean proceruses.
I heard a story that once upon a time, a couple of years in a row, there were a lot
of proceruses with a clearly red tint. This is attributed to some
fertilizers used at that time.

I measured it now specifically, a little smaller
and for comparison the smallest subspecies

1. ssp. callipygius Cavazzuti, 1986 NC-Turkey: Kursunlu, 05.1994, 31mm

2-3 ssp. propinquus Csiki, 1927
2- Turkey: Alem-Dagh, 08.1985, 53 mm
3- Turkey: Istambul, 08/2009, 50 mm

4. transversalis transversalis SE-Turkey: Adana, 1950, 48 mm

I have a whole box of them of different sizes 30 by 40 cm

How many species/subspecies do you have?how much is known? Carabus (Procerus) scabrosus tauricus (Bonelli, 1811) is it important to catch it for exchange with foreigners?

By subspecies-now many people understand differently and there are many differences - the most recent is the electronic version of Brzina, 2008 seems to be the year.

think that the work "Monografia del Genere Procerus" is still the best you can be ...... Pierfranco is the best expert subgenus Procerus and other authors in the scheme are doing just a mess ..

But seriously, so look at this whole group at the level of genetics and isoenzymes, you can blow out everyone's bags - then everything may fall into place, and in fact, many taxa are extremely rare and extremely commercial group - which complicates working with them. Many taxa of subgenus rank are simply phony and there is nothing to distinguish them from. These are highly variable beetles that can no longer migrate, as it was before (many centuries ago) due to the high anthropogenization of many of their modern habitats. They either disappear or form their own local populations with very interesting traits, such as whitefish in lakes and rivers in northern Russia.
So it seems that so far 4 -5 solid species, while I have not yet decided on the taxon sommeri - this is a subspecies or species. And so already transversalis Csiki, 1927 was raised to a species. By the way , I already see differences with the year of description. 1927 and 1929 as pictured - what is truth?

Please, if you can write to me in English ..... thanks
